Making the grade

McDaniel places 96 student-athletes on Dean’s List, nine on Green and Gold Honor Roll

WESTMINSTER, Md. – McDaniel College has announced its Dean’s List from the Spring 2011 semester and 96 Green Terror student-athletes qualified for the honors.

To qualify for the Dean’s List, a student must achieve a grade-point average (GPA) of 3.50 for the semester. A GPA of 3.5-3.699 earns a student Honors according to the College. A GPA of 3.7-3.899 earns a student High Honors while a GPA of 3.9 or above qualifies for Highest Honors.

McDaniel also honors student-athletes through the establishment of the Green and Gold Honor Roll, which was introduced in February through a joint initiative of the athletics department, including the Student-Athlete Advisory Council (SAAC), and President’s Office.

To be named to the Honor Roll, a student-athlete must be named to the Dean’s List in the same semester in which he or she has also been named to an athletic honor of All-Centennial Conference (CC) or higher.

Nine Green Terror student-athletes have earned the department’s honor in the first spring semester of its existence.

Freshman Emma Duesterhaus (Spartanburg, S.C./Spartanburg Day), a swimmer, earned a pair of silver medals at the 2011 conference championship meet, which translates into honorable mention honors in the pool. She earned High Honors in the classroom in the spring. A history major, she was part of the 200 medley relay, which finished second with a time of 1:49.70. Individually, she was runner-up in the 100 backstroke with a program-record time of 59.23 seconds.

Senior Brock Glotfelty (Grantsville, Md./Northern Garrett), a heavyweight on the wrestling team, was honorable mention all-conference but was also an All-American on the mat and earned Highest Honors in the classroom. An exercise science and physical education major, he is one of the most decorated student-athletes on the Hill in recent memory. In 2011, he broke the wrestling program’s all-time career wins record and finished second at the CC championship meet. He was third at the NCAA Division III meet – the highest finish by a Green Terror wrestler at the national meet – to earn his second All-America honors. He was also named to the Capital One Academic All-America College Division At-Large first team.

He shot 41.9 percent from the floor, including hitting a team-best 42 3-pointers.

Sophomore Paige Messersmith (Phoenix, Md./Dulaney), a midfielder on the women’s lacrosse team, earned second-team All-CC and second-team all-region honors on the field and High Honors in the classroom in the spring. An exercise science and physical education major, she finished second on the team with 24 goals and third on the team with 25 points. She led the team and CC with 55 draw controls, including a program-record 11 at Muhlenberg on Apr. 9. She also contributed 13 caused turnovers and 30 ground balls.

Nichols best finish came in the 110 hurdles, which he won in a time of 16.31 seconds. He also notched a pair of seconds in the 100 (11.83 seconds) and pole vault (3.66 meters). He was third in three more events.
