McDaniel forges split with Haverford, halts three-game skid
WESTMINSTER, Md. – Andrew Worm (Easton, Md./Easton) went a combined 5-for-8 with an RBI and run scored to lead McDaniel to a split with Haverford in Centennial Conference (CC) baseball action on Saturday.
The Fords (10-10-1, 4-3 CC) took game one 14-4 behind a 4-for-5
performance from Charlie Carluccio before the
Green Terror (9-7, 2-3 CC) halted its three-game skid with a 9-5
victory in the nightcap.
Brian Rosato (Narvon, Pa./Pequea Valley) went 8
1/3 innings on the mound, scattering seven hits and striking out
three for his second win of the season.
A Matthew Pace (Baltimore, Md./North County)
single up the middle plated Jon Zimmerman (Lemoyne,
Pa./Cedar Cliff) to stake McDaniel to a 1-0 lead in the
bottom of the first inning.
Three straight base hits in the visitor second, including a
Chris Dooley RBI double, gave Haverford a 2-1 lead
before four unearned runs in the bottom of the frame gave the Green
Terror the lead for good.
Russell Coover (Schuylkill Haven, Pa./Blue
Mountain) and Pace contributed RBI singles to key the
inning.
A Worm double in the gap and Sergio Nieto (Mameroneck,
Md./Rye Neck) single stretched the lead to 6-2 in the
bottom of the third.
A Nieto double keyed a three-run sixth that made it a 9-2 game an
error in the top of the ninth led to three Haverford runs, setting
the final margin.
Zimmerman finished with three hits and two runs scored in game
two.
An error and back-to-back singles from Harold Baines, Jr.
(St. Michaels, Md./St. Michaels) and Coover staked
McDaniel to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first
inning.
A Chris Dooley two-run single with two outs and a
Louis DeRosa RBI knock turned the one-run deficit
into a 3-1 lead in the top of the second.
After the Fords stretched the lead to 5-1 in the third,
Troy Tipton (Hanover, Pa./South Western) two-run
single and Worm single up the middle trimmed the deficit to 5-4 but
a five-run top of the fourth pushed the lead to 10-4.
A Carluccio double, wild pitch and Jeff Butera
single in the sixth pushed the lead to 11-4 before three runs in
the seventh set the final margin.
The Green Terror finished with 14 runs in each game but hit into
four double plays and stranded 10 runners in the
opener.
Colin Sarafin pitched the full seven innings of
game to improve to 3-1.
Zimmerman, Coover and Zach Croft (Laurel,
Md./DeMatha) rapped out four hits apiece in the
twinbill.
The Green Terror returns to action at home against Swarthmore on
Sunday. The first game of the doubleheader begins at 12:30
p.m.
