F&M sweeps McDaniel to close regular season

WESTMINSTER, Md. – J.T. Triantos went 4-for-7 with five runs scored and two RBIs to lead Franklin & Marshall to a doubleheader sweep of McDaniel in Centennial Conference (CC) baseball action on Saturday.

            The Diplomats (20-13-1, 13-5 CC) took a 12-10 decision in the first game before tallying 10 runs in the first four innings en route to a 13-3 victory in the nightcap, completing the sweep.
            Justin Reitz (Halifax, Pa./Halifax) and Zach Croft (Laurel, Md./DeMatha) each had five hits for the Green Terror (15-15, 7-11 CC) in their final collegiate games.
            Trailing 7-6 after four innings, Franklin & Marshall plated six runs in the fifth inning to break the game open before holding on for the game-one win.
            Bill Murray led off the frame with a single before scoring from second on a Russell Tischler one-out single to even the game at 7-all.
            After a throwing error allowed Tischler to advance to third, he scored on a Triantos single for the go-ahead run.
            Matt Will followed with a single to chase starter Tyler Persun (Mount Joy, Pa./Donegal). Reliever Danny Snight (Silver Spring, Md./St. John’s College Prep) retired the first batter he faced for the second out but Shea Moriarity kept his 2-2 offering just inside the left-field foul pole for a three-run blast, stretching the lead to 11-7.
            A Jason Anderson single and Nick Rolnick double pushed the lead to 12-7.
            Aftr the game’s only 1-2-3 inning in the bottom of the fifth, Harold Baines, Jr. (St. Michaels, Md./St. Michaels) dropped a one-out single into left field in the home sixth.
            Russell Coover (Schuylkill Haven, Pa./Blue Mountain and Troy Tipton (Hanover, Pa./South Western) each drew walks to load the bases before an RBI groundout from Andrew Worm (Easton, Md./Easton) and Croft single pulled the hosts within 12-9.
            A Kyle Pruitt (Berlin, Md./Stephen Decatur) pinch-hit home run off the right-field scoreboard to lead off the bottom of the seventh closed the deficit to 12-10.
            Jon Zimmerman (Lemoyne, Pa./Cedar Cliff) followed with a single to left-center before a fielder’s choice and Coover single put the tying runs on base with two outs but Brendan McCreary got his second strikeout of the inning to earn his first save of the year.
            Brad Andres pitched the first six to improve to 4-1.
            After the Diplomats grabbed an early 1-0 lead with an unearned run in the top of the first, Zimmerman single to lead off the bottom of the frame and scored on a Reitz double.
            Reitz later scored on a Tipton RBI single to give McDaniel a 2-1 lead.
            A Will two-run single in the visitor second gave the Diplomats a 3-2 advantage before the Green Terror countered with three earned runs keyed by a Coover two-run double for a 5-3 lead.
            Two unearned runs in the F&M third evened the game before taking the lead with an unearned tally in the fourth.
            A Coover RBI single in the fourth coupled with a passed ball gave McDaniel a 7-6 lead.
            In game two, Reitz blasted his first home run of the season over the left-field fence in the bottom of the first to give the Green Terror a 1-0 lead.
            An Anderson two-run double in the visitor second keyed a five-run frame before Moriarty stepped up in with the bases loaded in the third and used a double to right to clear the bags to cap a four-run frame.
            A John Dutton double plated Eric Bornstein in the fourth to push the lead to 10-1.
            Playing in his final collegiate game, Zimmerman led off the bottom of the sixth with his first career home run – a solo shot to right field.
            An Anderson three-run double in the seventh stretched the lead to 13-2 before a two-out error allowed McDaniel to score one in the bottom of the ninth to set the final margin.
