Red Devils come out on top of pitchers’ duel with McDaniel
CARLISLE, Pa. – Ben Sciambi went 2-for-3, including a two-run single in the fifth to lead Dickinson to a 4-2 victory over McDaniel in the Centennial Conference (CC) baseball opener for both teams on Tuesday.
Russell Coover (Schuyklill Haven, Pa./Blue Mountain) went 2-for-4 for the Green Terror (4-5, 0-1 CC), who was held to four or fewer runs for the third time in the last four games.
The Red Devils (4-10, 1-0 CC) jumped on the board early before the game turned into a pitchers’ duel after a pair of slugfests last season.
Mike Schuster drew a walk to lead off the bottom of the first before a Jordan Kaufman single put runners at first and second.
Garrett Horan followed with a double to plate Shuster before Kaufman scored on a Tyler Rosa sacrifice fly for a 2-0 lead.
A pair of walks and a two singles loaded the bases for McDaniel in the top of the second. With two outs, Brandon Kline (Myersville, Md./Middletown) notched the first of his two hits to drive home Chris Longo (Monroe, N.Y./Monroe-Woodbury) to cut the deficit in a half.
A groundout to first left the bases loaded and ended the rally.
An error to lead off the home fifth coupled with a Rosa single and stolen base put runners at second and third with one out. Sciambi laced a single to plate both runners and stretch the lead to 4-1.
Kline led off the top of the seventh with a single. With the help of an Andrew Worm (Easton, Md./Easton) single, deep fly ball and wild pitch, Kline scored but Sean White fanned five of the final 10 batters he faced to pick up the save.
Evan Fitzpatrick struck out six in six innings to grab the win.
