McDaniel notches first conference sweep
Green Terror gets solid pitching, offense in two wins over Ursinus
WESTMINSTER, Md. – Brandon Kline (Myersville, Md./Middletown) went a combined 6-for-10 with two RBIs and two runs scored in McDaniel's doubleheader sweep of Ursinus in Centennial Conference (CC) baseball action on Saturday.
Zach Jones (Frederick, Md./Tuscarora) went the distance in game one for the Green Terror (9-15, 5-11 CC), scattering five hits in an 8-1 win before Kline notched his third four-hit outing of the season to key an 18-hit attack in a 12-4 victory.
Mike Schwager rapped out four hits to pace the Bears (14-16, 5-11 CC), who had 14 knocks in game two but stranded 15 runners on base.
Kline led home the home first in game one, reaching second on a throwing error before scoring on a pair of groundouts to stake McDaniel to a 1-0 lead.
Jones and Ursinus starter Steve Christakos both threw up zeros until Brandon Sullivan led off the visitor visitor fifth with a double.
A Bret Umstead bunt single but runners at the corners before Rob Vogt's sacrifice fly plated Sullivan to knot the game at 1-all.
With two outs in the bottom of the frame, Tyler Jackow (Colonia, N.J./Colonia) notched a double down the left-field line before scoring on a Kline two-bagger to the gap in left-center to break the deadlock.
A Ricky LaSota (Burtonsville, Md./Paint Branch) two-run single to right stretched the lead to 4-1 before Jackow drove in Nieto with a ground ball out.
In game two, the Green Terror batted around in both the third and fourth to build an 8-1 lead en route to the sweep.
With two outs, Coover roped a ball into right to score Kline and Worm before a Pace double played Christopher and Coover for a 4-0 lead.
Singles from Schwager and Kevin Wilson pulled Ursinus within 4-1 in the top of the fourth but the McDaniel offense went back to work in the bottom of the inning.
Hart, Chris Zimmerman (Princetown, N.J./Montgomery) and Kline all reached on singles to the left side of the infield to load the bases.
A Worm ground out stretched the lead to 5-1 before Christopher singled home Zimmerman.
Coover loaded the bases with a walk and chased Bear starter Jake Kohler. Sean Grimes issued back-to-back bases loaded walks to Pace and Nieto before getting a double play to get out of the inning.
Doubles from Zimmerman and Kline pushed the lead to 9-1 in the fifth before Ursinus closed to within 9-3 in the sixth behind four singles and a walk.
A Hart two-run double keyed a three-run eighth that stretched the lead to 12-3.
A one-out hit by pitch, Schwager double and bases-loaded two-out walk to Danny Ludwig in the top of the ninth set the final margin.
Danny Snight (Silver Spring, Md./St. John's College Prep) struck out five in seven innings of work to pick up his third win of the season in the nightcap.
The Green Terror returns to action at Messiah on Tuesday. Game time is 3:30 p.m.
