McDaniel pulls away late for second straight double-digit win
WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – Matthew Bodnar (Douglasville, Pa./Central Catholic) went 4-for-5 with an RBI and three runs scored to pace McDaniel in a 16-4 victory over Lawrence at the 2011 RussMatt Central Florida Invitational on Wednesday.
Brandon Kline (Myersville, Md./Middletown) added a four-hit day for the Green Terror (4-3), going 4-for-6 with three runs scored and an RBI in the team's second straight win by more than 10 runs.
As a team, McDaniel rapped out 20 hits, including six for extra bases.
Luke Barthelmess and Robert Rashid led the Vikings (0-3) with two hits apiece.
Trailing 2-1, Bodnar led off the visitor third with a single before a Kline single put runners at first and second.
Marshall Betts (Berlin, Md./Stephen Decatur) followed with a sacrifice before a Patrick Christopher (Union Beach, N.J./St. John Vianney) RBI groundout scored Bodnar. An error allowed Kline to score as well for a 3-2 lead.
A pickoff attempt and ensuing rundown allowed Pace to score for a 4-2 lead.
With two outs, a Longo single scored Chiorello before Ryan Byrnes (New City, N.Y./Clarkstown North) triple cleared the bags for an 8-2 lead.
A Marc Linger walk, Barthelmess single and Gabe Henriques sacrifice fly made it a 8-3 game in the bottom of the inning.
With one out in the eighth, Byrnes was hit by a pitch before moving to second on a passed ball and scoring on a Bodnar single.
Kline followed with a single of his own to put runners at the corners before stealing second.
A Betts sacrifice fly scored Bodnar. Christopher and Chiorello followed with RBI knocks of their own, including a double by Chiorello.
Najera drew a walk before Chiorello was able to score on a Pace RBI single for a 13-3 lead.
A Davide Harris one-out single and three walks in the bottom of the eighth made it a 13-4 game before the Green Terror tacked on three in the ninth for the final margin.
Byrnes led off with a double before back-to-back singles from Bodnar and Kline scored Byrnes.
A Christopher RBI double and Chiorello RBI groundout scored the final runs.
An error, wild pitch and Chiorello RBI single staked McDaniel to a 1-0 lead in the first.
Michael Baldino and Barthelmess drove in runs in the bottom of the second to give Lawrence a 2-1 advantage.
Andrew Monger (Ellicott City, Md./Mt. Hebron) went five innings, striking out four for his second win of the season.
McDaniel returns to action against Loras in a doubleheader on Thursday. The first game of the twinbill starts at 1:30 p.m.
