Dickinson jumps on top early, defeats McDaniel

WESTMINSTER, Md. – Joseph Tursi went 3-for-5 to lead Dickinson to a 7-4 Centennial Conference (CC) baseball victory over McDaniel on Thursday.

Patrick Christopher (Union Bridge, N.J./St. John Vianney) led the Green Terror (10-13, 3-8 CC) with three hits of his own.

Ben Sciambi added a hit but also drove in three runs for the Red Devils (15-13, 2-9 CC), who won for just the second time in their last 12 games.

A one-out walk to Evan Hennessy followed by a James Santoro single put runners at first and second in the top of the first inning.

Tyler Rosa followed with a single into right field to plate Hennessy before a failed back-pick play at first base allowed the runners to advance to second and third.

A Jordan Kaufman walk loaded the bases for Sciambi, who popped a ball foul down the left-field line near the out-of-play line. The ball was caught and then ruled dead, allowing the runners to all move up a base and give Dickinson a 2-0 lead.

A Jimmy Najera (Fort Washington, Md./DeMatha) double with two outs in the bottom of the second – McDaniel's first hit of the game – followed by a Chris Longo (Monroe, N.Y./Monroe-Woodbury) single to left cut the deficit in half.

After Green Terror starter Gio Fricchione (New Tripoli, Pa./Northwestern) recorded the first out of the third, five straight Red Devils reached base to push the score to 5-1 and bring in lefty Mike Freeman (Lititz, Pa./Warwick), who retired both batters he faced in the inning.

Rosa started the stretch with a single through the right side before Kaufman hit a screamer back up through the box to put runners at first and second.

A Sciambi double to the wall in right-center cleared the bases before he was able to score on a Matt Tuneski single to left.

Tursi singled up the middle for Dickinson's eighth hit in the first three innings. The visitors finished with 12 knocks on the day while McDaniel had 10.

A walk to Tyler Jackow (Colonia, N.J./Colonia) with one out in the bottom of the first and Brandon Kline (Myersville, Md./Middletown) bunt single put runners at first and second.

Christopher followed with a single off the pitcher to load the bases before Marshall Betts (Berlin, Md./Stephen Decatur) dropped a base hit just out of the reach of the second baseman and center fielder to score Jackow and keep the bases loaded.

The first of two straight inning-ending double plays, however, halted the rally.

Singles from Jackow and Christopher coupled with a wild pitch and Kline sacrifice trimmed the deficit to 5-3 in the home fifth.

A pair of errors around a Hennessey double in the sixth inning and a Rosa sacrifice fly allowed the Red Devils to stretch the lead to 7-3.

Three straight two-out walks to Longo, Freeman and Jackow brought Kline to the plate representing the tying run in the bottom of the frame.

Dickinson starter Ryan Kramer bounced the 1-2 pitch in the dirt that Kline appeared to check his swing on but was called out on the attempt to quench the rally in what would be Kramer's final inning of work after eight hits, two strikeouts and five walks.

Christopher greeted Keith Bolles with a single in the bottom of the seventh before moving to second on a wild pitch. With one out, pinch-hitter Robert Rowse (Ijamsville, Md./Urbana) poked a ball through the right side to score Christopher and make it a 7-4 game.

A walk to James Chiorello (East Windsor, N.J./Lawrenceville Prep) and wild pitch put the runners at the second and third but an infield fly and groundout stranded two of the Green Terror's 10 in the game.

Najera added two hits while Jackow was 1-for-2 with two walks and two runs scored.

McDaniel concludes the home-and-home series at Dickinson on Friday. Game time is 3:30 p.m.
