Messiah staves off rally to down McDaniel, 8-6

WESTMINSTER, Md. – Wes Hollenbach went 3-for-5 with an RBI and two runs scored to lead Messiah to an 8-6 victory over McDaniel in non-conference baseball action on Wednesday.

Brandon Kline (Myersville, Md./Middletown) and Ricky LaSota (Burtonsville, Md./Paint Branch) led the Green Terror (12-20) with two-hit performances in the season finale.

John Brubaker and Tory Arnesen each rapped out two hits for the Falcons (21-17), who opened up a 6-0 lead before staving off a late rally.

Drew Frankenfield drew a five-pitch walk to lead off the game before Brubaker singled through the left side to put runners at first and second.

Hollenbach followed with a single to right that scored Frankenfield but Brubaker was gunned down at third base for the first out while Hollenbach took second.

Ryan Brown followed with a double to left that scored Hollenbach for a 2-0 lead.

A fielding error and failed pickoff attempt put Frankenfield at second with one out in the third.

Hollenbach followed with a bloop single that put runners at second and third before Brown was hit by a pitch to load the bases.

An Arnesen bases-clearing double and muffed throw to the cutoff made it a 5-0 game with a runner at third.

David Sletta singled to the gap, scoring Arnesen for a 6-0 lead.

Kline led off the bottom of the inning with his second double of the year before scoring on a Patrick Christopher (Union Beach, N.J./St. John Vianney) bouncer back up the middle.

With two outs, senior Robert Rowse (Ijamsville, Md./Urbana) cranked his first collegiate home run over the left-field fence to pull the hosts within 6-3.

An Arnesen single, stolen base and Jamie Scott RBI single through the right side pushed the lead to 7-3 in the top of the fifth.

With two outs in the sixth, Jimmy Najera (Fort Washington, Md./DeMatha) singled to left before Chris Longo (Monroe, N.Y./Monroe-Woodbury) followed with a double to deep left to once again make it a three-run game.

Sean Hart made it a four-run lead once again, blasting a two-out solo shot to left.

A leadoff single from LaSota followed by a Matthew Pace (Baltimore, Md./North County) triple to the gap in right-center made it an 8-5 game in the bottom of the eighth, chasing starter Jon Lapp from the game after 100 pitches.

Zach Adams retired the three batters he faced to keep it a three-run game.

In the night, James Chiorello (East Windsor, N.J./Lawrenceville Prep) roped a one-out, pinch-hit double to the left-center gap before giving way to pinch-runner Dan French (Williamstown, N.J./Williamstown).

With two outs, Christopher drew a walk and LaSota singled to put runners at the corners and bring the winning run to the plate.

However, Josh Hershberger got a strikeout to preserve the win and earn his third save of the season.
