WESTMINSTER, Md. – When the baseball season opens on Saturday, McDaniel has a couple of important things working in its favor. Not only has the Green Terror been able to be on its field for the vast majority of preseason, but the squad also returns experience at virtually every position on the diamond.

Senior captain Chris Longo (Monroe, N.Y./Monroe Woodbury) anchors the team from behind the plate after hitting a team-best .359 last season.

Marshall Betts (Berlin, Md./Stephen Decatur) and James Chiorello (East Windsor, N.J./Lawrenceville Prep) emerged in the power spots in the lineup as freshmen but both missed time with injury. Chiorello rapped out 33 hits, including 13 for extra bases, with 18 RBIs from the cleanup spot while Betts had 26 hits and 13 RBIs from the three hole.

Patrick Christopher (Union Beach, N.J./St. John Vianney) and Jimmy Najera (Fort Washington, Md./DeMatha) return to their corner outfield positions and will likely flank Betts and Chiorello in the lineup once again.

Christopher, the starting right fielder, had a team-high 39 hits and was one of just two players to start all 32 games last year. He added 17 RBIs, three doubles, three triples and a home run. Christopher was 9-for-10 in stolen bases.

Najera, the starting left fielder, led the team with four home runs, hitting .323 with 32 hits, four doubles and a triple. He also knocked in 16 runs.

The Green Terror also returns its pitching staff fully intact from a 2011 corps that ranked fifth in the Centennial Conference in earned-run average.

Zach Jones (Frederick, Md./Tuscarora) will likely reprise his role as the ace of the staff after a recording a 3.47 ERA and fanning 46 batters last year.
