Betts records two hits
AUBURNDALE, Fla. – Rampo, ranked 14th in the d3baseball.com Division III poll, limited McDaniel to just two hits in an 8-0 non-conference baseball victory at the 2013 RussMatt Central Florida Invitational on Monday.
Marshall Betts (Berlin, Md./Stephen Decatur) recorded both hits for the Green Terror (7-4), who had just seven base runners in the game.
Christian Spurr led the Roadrunners (5-1) on offense with two hits, two RBIs and two runs scored. Daniel LaRocca went the distance on the mound with seven strikeouts.
Chris Werr led off the second inning with a single before Zach Carroll reached on a sacrifice attempt. Joe Venturino successfully executed the sacrifice to put runners at second and third for John Capuano, who doubled down the left-field line to score Werr for a 1-0 lead.
Kevin Case was hit by a pitch to lead off the third before scoring on a Spurr double to make it a 2-0 lead. A two-out error and Carroll sacrifice fly plated Spurr for a 3-0 advantage.
A base single, wild pitch and Spurr double stretched the lead to 4-0 to lead off the fifth before a pair of sacrifices scored Spurr to push the advantage to 5-0.
Dave Jacob was hit by a pitch to open the sixth before taking second on a sacrifice bunt. After a second hit batter in the frame, Paulus singled home Jacob.
Back-to-back doubles from Werr and Carroll coupled with a Capuano RBI groundout set the final margin in the ninth.
The Green Terror's best scoring threat came in the bottom of the seventh when Cameron Bahr (Southampton, N.J./Seneca) drew a walk to lead off the inning. Betts followed with a single down the line but a double play and strikeout got LaRocca out of trouble.
