FORT MYERS, Fla. – SUNY Plattsburgh scored all 13 of its runs over the final five innings to overcome an early 7-0 deficit and defeat McDaniel 13-8 at the Gene Cusic Classic in non-conference baseball action on Monday.
Logan Seitz (Columbia, Md./Howard) led the Green Terror (2-7) with a 2-for-5 day with two triples, adding three RBIs. Marshall Betts (Berlin, Md./Stephen Decatur) added a pair of hits in four at bats.
Yuya Osawa and Nicholas Lupo led the Cardinals (3-7) with four hits apiece from the top two spots in the lineup. Lupo added four RBIs while Osawa drove in three and scored three runs of his own.
Trailing 7-0, John Casten led off the visitor fifth with a single before Osawa added a one-out single. One of 10 combined errors in the game allowed Osawa to take second to put runners at second and third.
Lupo followed with a single of his own to score both runners. A two-out hit from Frank Buksa, a walk and second error in the inning cut the deficit to 7-4.
A Tom Gallo (Bernardsville, N.J./Bernards) single, wild pitch and Seitz triple stretched the advantage to 8-4 in the bottom of the fifth.
Chris Pescetti was hit by a pitch to lead off the sixth inning before an error put runners at first and second.
A sacrifice moved both runners up a base before Osawa and Lupo put together back-to-back RBI singles to make it an 8-6 game.
Zach Hieb drew a one-out walk in the seventh before four straight hits and a fielding error, including an Osawa double, turned the two-run deficit into a two-run lead.
Three hits in the ninth inning keyed another three-run frame to set the final margin.
Sean Sivo (Ellicott City, Md./Howard) drew a walk to lead off the bottom of the first inning before stealing second.
Drew Phillips (Sherwood, Md./St. Michael's) followed with an RBI double to put McDaniel on the board first.
A pair of errors coupled with a Nick Valori (Sewell, N.J./Washington Twp.) single stretched the lead to 3-0.
Phillips led off the home third with a walk before taking second on a sacrifice bunt and scoring on a Betts double with two outs.
After Betts went to third on a wild pitch and Gallo walked to put runners at the corners, Seitz ripped his first of the two three-baggers to drive in both runs and stretch the lead to 6-0.
An error allowed Seitz to score for the 7-0 lead.
