WESTMINSTER, Md. – McDaniel plated two runs in the bottom of the ninth for a game-one win before scoring early in game two to complete the sweep of Muhlenberg in Centennial Conference (CC) baseball action on Saturday.
The Green Terror (11-16, 3-7 CC) outslugged the Mules (13-15, 3-7 CC) in the opener for an 11-10 win before winning a much lower-scoring nightcap, 4-2.
Antonio Rosanova (Laurel, Md./DeMatha) led McDaniel with five hits on the day, including one of two four-hit performances in game one.
Robbie Hopes added six hits on the day for Muhlenberg that included a four-hit opener of his own.
Trailing 10-8 in the bottom of the eighth, Chris Morris (Wynnewood, Pa./Harriton) smashed a two-out pinch-hit single off the first-baseman's glove before Nick Valori (Sewell, N.J./Washington Twp.) and Rosanova each slapped their fourth hits of the day to score pinch-runner Sam Brustad (Silver Spring, Md./St. John's College) and close the deficit to 10-9.
Brandon Richmond (Owings Mills, Md./Owings Mills) worked around a two-out walk in the top off the ninth to keep it a one-run game.
A throwing error on the ensuing sacrifice attempt put runners at second and third before an intentional pass was issued to Tim Griest (Lititz, Pa./Warwick) to set up the force at any base.
After a strikeout, Tyler O'Shea (Springfield, Pa./Springfield) poked a single just past a diving second baseman and Seitz and pinch-runner Keegan Romanoff (Hanover, Pa./New Oxford) both scored without a throw for the walkoff win.
A Chris Grillo triple and Hopes single up the middle staked the Mules to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first.
Valori led off the bottom of the frame with a double before a Rosanova single put runners at the corners. An Eric Grantland (Pasadena, Md./Northeast) single tied the game before the Green Terror executed a double steal from the corners to plate Rosanova for a 2-1 lead.
Brad Thaxton (Stevensville, Md./DeMatha) followed with a one-out double down the line for a 3-1 advantage.
A Valori double off the fence and Rosanova single keyed a three-run second to stretch the lead to 6-1 before the Mules took advantage of three walks to key a five-run third and tie the game.
A Mike Dunn (Lanham, Md./DeMatha) walk and Valori two-run bomb to left field put the hosts back in front, 8-6.
A two-run Jon Capra double keyed a four-run sixth inning that turned the two-run deficit into a two-run lead.
Nelson and O'Shea each had two hits in game one. Richmond pitched the final two innings with three strikeouts for his first collegiate win.
In game two, McDaniel took advantage of a throwing error, failed pickoff, stolen base and wild pitch to score Rosanova in the bottom of the first for a 1-0 lead.
A Kaleb Reitz (Halifax, Pa./Halifax) walk, error on a sacrifice attempt and squeeze play doubled the lead in the second.
A Grantland single and back-to-back walks loaded the bases in the third before a fielding error and Will Strauss (Freeport, N.Y./Waldorf) sacrifice fly made it a 4-0 game in the fourth.
Doubles from Eric Reitmeyer and Chris Grillo around Brenden Weiss and John Icaza singles with two outs in the fifth closed the deficit to 4-2.
McDaniel, however, worked in and out of trouble over the remainder of the game, stranding eight runners on base over the final five frames.
Thaxton earned the win on the mound in game one, striking out five in 5 1/3 innings while Zach Fortuna (Metuchen, N.J./Metuchen) pitched the ninth for the save.
Grantland had a pair of hits in game two.
The Green Terror returns to action Washington (Md.) on Tuesday. Game time is 3:30 p.m.
