Front seven as solid as ever

Front seven as solid as ever

WESTMINSTER, Md. – If there is one thing to point to as the strength of the McDaniel defense in 2010, it was stopping the run.

The squad finished last year 35th in Division III against the run, allowing 110.4 yards per game but was in the top five for much of the early part of the season.

With all but two starters back from the front seven but a likely starting group that all have significant experience, the Green Terror will look to reprise that effort. Sam Cox (Towson, Md./Towson) returns for a fifth year to anchor the defensive line off a seven-sack season. He added a team-best 16.5 tackles for loss and broke up a pair of passes at the line.

Diego Weiner (Miami, Fla./Riverside Military Academy [Ga.]), a captain as a junior, will anchor the middle of the linebacking corps after pacing the squad with 74 stops a year ago.

Zach Martin (Clarksville, Md./River Hill) added 65 stops after moving into the starting weak-side backer role in week four.

The only true question going into the season is the secondary, which returns just Kevin White (Bryn Mawr, Pa./Haverford Twp.) as a starter. However, if the pass defense can limit opponent's aerial attack, the run defense will likely do its job and the result will be the defense holding up its end of the deal and taking pressure off the offense.
