Cardinals post 3-0 win to open season
WESTMINSTER, Md. - Liz McCormick recorded a goal and an assist to lead Catholic to a 3-0 win over McDaniel in season-opening field hockey action for both teams on Saturday.
The Cardinals (1-0) finished with a 7-4 advantage in shots, including holding the Green Terror (0-1) without an attempt in the second half.
Stephanie Thomson (Glen Burnie, Md./Chesapeake) made two saves for McDaniel.
Off a corner in the seventh minute, Kendall Petschauer stopped the ball and fed McCormick, who tapped the ball home for a 1-0 lead.
Nearly six minutes later, McCormick found Carley Walko in front of the cage. Walko tipped home the ball to double the advantage with just 12:34 elapsed.
Mary Swarthout sent a long pass in from the right side to Tory Gagliardi who lifted the ball into the cage, setting the final margin with 5:37 to play.
McDaniel returns to action at home against Virginia Wesleyan on Monday. Game time is 1 p.m.
