Johns Hopkins secure bye with 2-0 win
Green Terror needs win on Saturday to assure playoff berth
BALTIMORE, Md. - Carly Bianco tallied in the 29th minute to help No. 17 Johns Hopkins to a 2-0 victory over McDaniel in Centennial Conference (CC) field hockey action on Wednesday.
With the victory, the Blue Jays (12-4, 7-2 CC) secured a first-round bye in the upcoming CC tournament.
The Green Terror (7-9, 5-4 CC) falls into a five-team battle for the final two playoff spots with one game remaining on the schedule. McDaniel plays host to Haverford, which is also in the five-team mix, in Saturday's regular-season finale. The Green Terror can secure a spot with a victory. However, depending on other results on the final day, McDaniel could earn a berth even with a loss.
Bianco redirected a Ariana Branchini shot at the 28:22 mark to put the hosts on the board.
Just 5:33 later, Gabi Henn doubled the advantage, tipping a ball around the defense and keeper.
Johns Hopkins finished with a 16-10 advantage in shots and 11-10 edge in penalty corners.
Stephanie Thomson (Glen Burnie, Md./Chesapeake) made seven saves for the Green Terror while Sophia Tieu had four stops for the Blue Jays.
Game time on Saturday is 1 p.m.
