Ten players named to Academic Squad

WESTMINSTER, Md. – Ten members of the McDaniel College field hockey team have been named to the 2009 National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) National Academic Squad, released recently.

Senior Emma Ardolino (Freeland, Md./Hereford) joined junior Stephanie Hammond (Parkton, Md./Hereford) and sophomores Hope Battista (Crofton, Md./South River), Kathryn Corson (Ocean View, N.J./Ocean City) and Kelly McGarry (Ocean City, Md./Stephen Decatur) on the list.

 Freshmen Eliza Blatchford (Gloucester, Mass./Manchester Essex Regional), Kerry Campbell (Gaithersburg, Md./Damascus), Katherine Jones (Westminster, Md./Winters Mill) and Paige Messersmith (Phoenix, Md./Dulaney) also made the necessary grade after their first semester on campus.

To be a member of the squad, a student-athlete must have achieved a minimum cumulative grade-point average of 3.3 through the fall semester of the 2009-10 academic year.

Ardolino, a defender, started all 17 games on defense and added one goal. She made her fourth appearance on the team.

Hammond, a defender, started 17 games.

Battista, a midfielder, started all 17 games with one goal and one assist.

Corson, a forward, appeared in all 17 games with three starts, adding one goal and one assist.

McGarry, a midfielder, appeared in two games before missing most of the season with injury.

Blatchford, a forward, appeared in 12 games with two goals.

Campbell, a defender, appeared in 11 games as a freshman.

Jones, a midfielder, started 15 of her 16 appearances, tallying a goal and four assists.

Messersmith, a midfielder, started all 17 games with one assist.

Ardolino, Hammond and McGarry were also selected to the Centennial Conference (CC) Academic Honor Roll after the fall season.

No fewer than 102 CC student-athletes made the list this year.

As a team, McDaniel was recognized as one of 104 Division III squads with a team GPA of at least 3.0, including all 11 CC teams.

The Green Terror finished the season 7-10 overall (5-5 CC).
