Green Terror downs Virginia Wesleyan 3-1 to split on weekend trip
VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – Katie Corson (Ocean View, N.J./Ocean City) scored a goal and an assist to lead McDaniel to a 3-1 victory over Virginia Wesleyan in non-conference field hockey action at the U.S. National Training Center on Sunday.
The Green Terror (2-2) notched a pair of goals just 1:01 apart to take an early 2-0 lead en route to evening its record on the young season.
Ashton Perry scored for the Marlins (0-5), who received nine saves from goalkeeper Chelsea Baker.
Kaitlin Boerman (Pasadena, Md./Chesapeake) finished a Katie Jones (Westminter, Md./Winters Mill) helper at the 10:43 mark to give McDaniel an early edge.
Sarah Meszler (Herkimer, N.Y./Herkimer) doubled the advantage with her first collegiate tally a minute later, finishing the feed from Corson.
Perry tallied an unassisted goal in the 42nd minute before Corson reestablished the two-goal advantage off an assist from Paige Messersmith (Phoenix, Md./Dulaney) with 22:20 to play.
The Green Terror finished with a 22-13 advantage in shots, including a 13-7 margin in the decisive first half. Stephanie Thomson (Glen Burnie, Md./Chesapeake) made five saves.
McDaniel returns to action at Franklin & Marshall on Wednesday. Game time is 7:30 p.m.
