Defense takes over in second half

WESTMINSTER, Md. – Catholic scored four first-half goals around a 62-minute lightning delay en route to a 5-0 victory over McDaniel in non-conference field hockey action on Tuesday.

Stephanie Thomson (Glen Burnie, Md./Chesapeake) registered six saves for the Green Terror (6-2), who limited the 13th-ranked Cardinals (7-1) to just three second-half shots after a 15-2 barrage in the first 35 minutes.

Colleen Harwood and Katie Bertrand each scored twice to lead Catholic.

Harwood found the back of the cage off a scramble in the game's eighth minute for a 1-0 lead.

Just 2 minutes, 7 seconds after the game resumed, Kim Hermann hit Harwood at the top of the arc on a corner and Harwood fired it home for a 2-0 lead.

Bertrand knocked home a third marker from right in front of the cage nearly five minutes later before Hermann played a corner short to Rebecca Lukaszczyk, who sent it back to Hermann for a 4-0 lead in the 25th minute.

McDaniel held a slight edge in the carry of second-half play but the lone goal of the stanza game when Bertrand knocked in a scramble on the far post in the 66th minute.
