Thomson makes six saves

WESTMINSTER, Md. – Gettysburg scored a goal in each half to defeat McDaniel 2-0 in a key Centennial Conference (CC) field hockey game on Tuesday.

Stephanie Thomson (Glen Burnie, Md./Chesapeake) made six saves for the Green Terror (8-5, 3-4 CC), who fell in a matchup of two of the four teams that entered the day tied for fourth place in the conference standings.

Megan Feeg made six saves for the Bullets (6-7, 4-3 CC), including a sprawling kick save in the 54th minute to keep McDaniel off the board.

In the 10th minute, Hayward Sawers shot a ball that made its way through the defense and Kelly Spieker tipped it into the cage for a 1-0 lead.

Just 1 minute, 45 seconds after Feeg's highlight-reel save on a Paige Messersmith (Phoenix, Md./Dulaney) rocket from the top of the arc, Emily Kleinburg cleaned up a scramble in front of the cage to give Gettysburg a two-goal edge.

The Green Terror finished with a slim 12-11 advantage in shots, including a flurry of three straight shots in the 65th minute but a pair of Feeg saves and a defensive save from Megan Bernstein kept the shutout in place.

Gettysburg finished with a 14-10 advantage in penalty corners.

McDaniel returns to action at Stevenson on Thursday. Game time is 5 p.m.
