Meszler nets first-half goal
WESTMINSTER, Md. – Trailing 1-0, Washington (Md.) scored three goals in the second half to defeat McDaniel 3-1 in Centennial Conference (CC) field hockey action on Sunday.
Sarah Meszler (Herkimer, N.Y./Herkimer) staked the Green Terror (10-7, 4-6 CC) to the halftime advantage.
Claire McAuliffe tallied a pair of second-half goals to lift the Shorewomen (10-7, 6-4 CC) into the CC playoffs, playing the first-round game at Haverford on Wednesday.
By the time McDaniel had taken a 1-0 lead in the 24th minute, Haverford had defeated Swarthmore 3-1 to officially eliminate the Green Terror on the final day of the season for the third straight season.
Just 5:40 into the second half, Kristen Wille passed a ball in from the top of the arc, where McAuliffe knocked it home behind the defense to knot the game.
Off a corner nearly four minutes later, Emily Trees collected a rebound on the far post and sent it in front of the cage to Gabby Tarbert, who knocked it home for a 2-1 lead.
Hilary Manion deflected a hit from the top of the arc in the 53rd minute directly to a waiting McAuliffe to set the final margin.
At the 23:40 mark, Liz Moir (Frederick, Md./Gov. Thomas Johnson) sent a ball from the right baseline that Meszler tapped home for the 1-0 lead.
Stephanie Thomson (Glen Burnie, Md./Chesapeake) made seven saves for the Green Terror while Stephanie Harryman had five stops at the other end.
Washington finished with advantages of 17-8 in shots and 13-7 in penalty corners.
