WESTMINSTER, Md. – The McDaniel offense did the work in the first half and its defense held strong in the second half for a 3-1 Centennial Conference (CC) field hockey victory over Dickinson on Wednesday.
Three different players scored first-half goals for the Green Terror (5-5, 2-3 CC), including Paige Messersmith (Phoenix, Md./Dulaney) tallying her team-leading 11th goal of the season.
Tanya Bellingham scored for the Red Devils (4-7, 0-5 CC) on the team's only first-half shot.
Tied at 1-all, Danielle DeColli (Mt. Airy, Md./South Carroll) played a quick pass to Messersmith off a corner that the senior fired in from the top of the arc at the 28:38 mark.
Five minutes later, Messersmith had another attempt from the top of the arc that the Dickinson keeper got a stick on but Sara Reynolds (York, Pa./Central York) was waiting on the post to tap in the loose ball for a 3-1 lead with 1:02 to play in the opening stanza.
Katie Corson (Ocean View, N.J./Ocean City) put home a rebounded shot off a corner to stake McDaniel to a 1-0 lead just 1:40 into the game.
Off a corner in the 17th minute, Alyssa Stillwell centered a pass that Bellingham snuck through the defense to knot the game.
Vicci Alexander (Annapolis, Md./Archbishop Spalding) made two saves in her first start in goal.
The Green Terror finished with a 20-6 advantage in shots, including 13-1 in the decisive first half. McDaniel also held a 15-8 advantage in penalty corners.
McDaniel returns to action at No. 12 Catholic on Sunday. Game time is 2 p.m.
