WESTMINSTER, Md. – Swarthmore took 40 shots in the game but needed a shootout to defeat McDaniel 3-2 in Centennial Conference (CC) field hockey action on Saturday.
Emily Houska (Shrewsbury, Pa./Susquehannock) led the Green Terror (1-7, 0-3 CC) with her team-leading fifth goal of the season.
Clare Perez scored once in regulation for the Garnet (5-3, 1-2 CC) and also converted the clinching shootout goal for the victory.
Megan Quattrone (Carlisle, Pa./Carlisle Area) knocked back her own rebound in the 28th minute to stake the hosts to a 1-0 lead.
Halsey Hutchinson responded less than six minutes later, tipping in a Perez pass.
Perez then finished from the top of the circle on a corner in the 37th minute.
On a scramble in front of the cage, Quattrone tipped the ball to Houska, who finished for the equalizer in the 44th minute.
Sophie Peipher and Riya Garg each converted their shootout attempt for a 2-0 lead in the best-of-five series. Gabrielle Yore (Olney, Md./Sherwood) came back to converted on the Green Terror's third attempt to make it 2-1. Perez, however, converted on the final attempt of the first round to secure the game.
Swarthmore finished with advantages of 40-14 in shots and 29-4 in penalty corners.
McDaniel returns to action at home against Washington (Md.) on Friday. Game time is 7 p.m.
