Sarris-Grau leads three in double figures with 16
WESTMINSTER, Md. – Muhlenberg's AJ Dean canned two free throws with 3.2 seconds left in regulation to give the visitors a 71-70 Centennial Conference (CC) men's basketball victory over McDaniel on Saturday.
Louis Sarris-Grau (Huntingdon Valley, Pa./Lower Moreland) recorded a season-high 16 points to lead the Green Terror (4-8, 1-4 CC), who also got 13 points from Cullen Murray-Kemp (Trappe, Md./Easton) and a season-best 12 points from Evan Pupelis (Manhasset, N.Y./Manhasset).
Spencer Liddic led the Mules (9-2, 3-2 CC) with 25 points and 11 rebounds while Malique Killing added 20 points, including hitting 9 of 13 attempts from the charity stripe. As a team, Muhlenberg went 22-for-36 from the line while McDaniel was just 7-for-9.
Muhlenberg trailed by as many as 10 in the second in the second half and were behind 69-61 before Liddic hit a jumper with 1:42 to play to make it a six-point game.
Killing closed the deficit to four 15 seconds later off a turnover in the backcourt.
With 55.9 seconds on the clock, Austin Curry's lone point of the second drew the Mules within 69-66.
Christopher Cowles (West Chester, Pa./Bayard Rustin) canned the first of two free throws with 42.8 seconds remaining to stretch the lead back to four but Killing drained a triple with 28.0 seconds showing to make it a one-point game.
The Green Terror missed the front end of a 1-and-1 with 22.9 seconds on the clock before Dean gave the visitors their only lead of the second half.
Murray-Kemp's last-ditch shot from the right wing bounced off the rim twice before falling to the ground to set the final margin.
The teams traded baskets in the game's first two minutes before Andrew Merlo (Rehoboth, Del./Cape Henlopen) hit a 3-pointer to put the hosts on top 7-4 with 17:42 to play.
Baskets from Liddic and Dean gave Muhlenberg a 12-10 lead before Sarris-Grau hit a 3-pointer to make it a 13-12 game with 14:07 showing.
A Dean layup and Brian Leeds free throws put the Mules up 15-13 with 11:05 remaining before Tyler Rudd (Glen Burnie, Md./Glen Burnie) hit one of seven first-half Green Terror treys for a 16-15 lead with 10:31 to play, sparking a 13-1 run that gave his team a 26-16 lead just 1:50 later.
A Hunter Forsman layup trimmed the deficit to 30-27 but McDaniel scored 10 of the half's final 13 points, including two Doug Macrone (Hatboro, Pa./Hun School of Princeton) free throws with all zeros on the clock for a 40-31 halftime edge.
Hargrove shaved the deficit to 45-42 with 14:51 to play before the Green Terror eventually pushed the lead back to double digits with a layup to make it 64-54 with 5:48 to play.
Pupelis added seven rebounds while Macrone chipped in eight points, four rebounds and three assists in his return to the lineup. Rudd finished with seven points and three rebounds.
McDaniel returns to action at home against Haverford on Thursday. Game time is 8 p.m.
