WESTMINSTER, Md. – Haverford finished the game on a 6-2 run to break a 60-all deadlock and defeat McDaniel 66-62 in Centennial Conference (CC) men's action on Thursday.
Cullen Murray-Kemp (Trappe, Md./Easton) led the Green Terror (4-9, 1-5 CC) with 22 points and eight rebounds while Louis Sarris-Grau (Huntingdon Valley, Pa./Lower Moreland) added 12 points and nine rebounds.
Cam Baker paced the Fords (5-9, 3-4 CC) with 19 points while Louis Cipriano also reached double digits with 17 points. Brett Cohen recorded a double-double with 12 points and 17 rebounds.
Trailing 49-37 with 9:42 to play, McDaniel put together a 21-9 stretch that included 10 straight points to draw the game even.
Murray-Kemp hit a pair of free throws with 9:05 on the clock to spark the run.
Sarris-Grau added a jumper and Christopher Cowles (West Chester, Pa./Bayard Rustin) hit the first of two free throws to make it a 49-42 game with 7:11 showing.
Murray-Kemp added two more free throws and Cowles scored three straight points to draw the hosts within two with 5:53 to play.
Baker snapped the stretch with two free throws of his own before Evan Pupelis (Manhasset, N.Y./Manhasset) hit a layup to return it to a two-point game.
Cipriano responded with a second-chance 3-pointer before a Pupelis three-point play made it a 54-52 game with 4:27 remaining.
Cohen pushed the lead back to four on the next Haverford possession but Murray-Kemp canned one of his three 3-pointers to trim the deficit to one.
Cohen converted the first of two free throw attempts with 2:56 to play before Murray-Kemp hit both of his attempts from the charity stripe 28 seconds later for a tie game.
Cipriano and Murray-Kemp exchanged triples to knot the game at 60-all with 1:20 to play.
The Fords went 4-for-6 from the line on their next two possessions to open up a 64-60 lead before Andrew Merlo (Rehoboth, Del./Cape Henlopen) drove and hit a layup to make it a two-point game with 9.9 seconds to play.
Ian Goldberg canned a pair of free throws at the other end to set the final margin.
The Green Terror opened the game on a 10-2 run, including six straight points from Sarris-Grau to turn a 2-all deadlock into an 8-2 lead with 16:41 to play.
Woody Butler (Smithsburg, Md./Middletown) added a layup with 15:03 on the clock to give McDaniel its biggest lead of the game.
However, Cipriano hit a jumper with 14:22 showing and a 3-pointer on the next possession to ignite a 13-2 burst that turned the eight-point deficit into a three-point lead with 11:41 to play.
A Bo Friddell jumper pushed the lead to as large as 23-17 en route to a 32-26 halftime advantage.
The lead hovered between four and nine points until Haverford scored eight straight points to take a 12-point lead with 9:42 remaining.
Cowles dished out five assists to go with his four points.
McDaniel returns to action at Ursinus on Saturday. Game time is 3 p.m.
