WESTMINSTER, Md. – McDaniel raced out to a 15-2 lead in the game's first 3:06 en route to an 85-63 victory over Penn State-Mont Alto in non-conference men's basketball action on Wednesday.
Tyler Rudd (Glen Burnie, Md./Glen Burnie) registered a career-best 27 points for the Green Terror (7-4), reaching 21 points behind a career-high four 3-pointers before halftime. He also pulled down eight rebounds. Evan Pupelis (Manhasset, N.Y./Manhasset) added his first double-double of the year with 10 points and 12 rebounds. Andrew Merlo (Rehoboth, Del./Cape Henlopen) added 15 points and a career-high six assists.
Keven King led three players in double digits for the Lions (6-4) with 20 points. Sharif Welton added 13 while Jeremiah Mitchell chipped in 12.
Rudd and Merlo got McDaniel off to a hot start, hitting triples on the team's first two offensive possessions for a 6-0 lead just 50 seconds into the game.
Rudd added a layup off a Phillip Perry (Crownsville, Md./Annapolis Area Christian) steal and outlet pss to open up an eight-point advantage.
Four straight points from Pupelis after a Derek Null baseline jumper stretched the lead to double digits for the first time just 2:27 into the game before Duane Echols (Jessup, Md./Hammond) added a 3-pointer of his own for the 13-point edge.
A Mitchell layup closed the deficit to 25-19 with 7:48 to play in the opening half but Merlo countered with a layup of his own and Echols threw down a dunk on the break to ignite a 21-9 run the break for a 46-28 lead.
Mitchell hit a jumper with 16:58 to play in the second half to trim the margin to 51-38 but the Green Terror tallied 13 of the game's next 18 points to take a 20-point lead for the first time with 12:09 showing.
Nic Martin (Hagerstown, Md./St. Maria Goretti) added 10 points off the bench. Echols finished with nine points.
McDaniel returns to action at Muhlenberg on Saturday. Game time is 4 p.m.
