CHESTERTOWN, Md. – Washington (Md.) overcame a 21-5 deficit midway through the first half, rallying to defeat McDaniel 49-44 in Centennial Conference (CC) men's basketball action on Wednesday.
Josh McWilliams (Newtown, Pa./Council Rock North) led the Green Terror (9-13, 5-10 CC) with 15 points.
James Drury paced the Shoremen (7-15, 3-12 CC) with 11 points off the bench.
A Tas Dixon three-point play with 7:29 to play in the first half was Washington's third field goal of the first half and sparked a 15-5 close to the first half that trimmed the margin to 25-20 at the break.
After a Steve Low triple made it a 21-17 game, McWilliams snapped a 4-minute 30-second scoring drought with a layup at the 4:05 mark.
Two Nick Perugino (Lewes, Del./Salesianum) free throws with 1:13 showing pushed the lead back to eight but a Drury three-point play in the final 18 seconds made it a five-point game.
Keyed by three points each from Austin Allen and Drury, the Shoremen tallied 10 of the first 11 points in the second half to take a 30-27 lead with 14:40 on the clock.
The lead extended as large as six on a Drury triple with 12:57 showing before the Green Terror countered with an 8-2 run to knot the game at 37-all.
Washington, however, tallied the next seven to make it a 44-37 game with 3:56 remaining.
A McWilliams 3-pointer with 33 seconds to play closed the deficit to 46-44 but the Shoremen hit three of four attempts from the free-throw line to close out the win.
McDaniel used a 15-0 run to open up the 16-point lead. Austin Cannon (Hampstead, Md./Manchester Valley) tallied six of his 10 points during the stretch.
The Green Terror returns to action at Haverford on Saturday. Game time is 3 p.m.
