McDaniel finishes fifth opening spring invitational schedule at home

ABBOTTSTOWN, Pa. – Greg Bowman (Catonsville, Md./Catonsville) fired a team-low round of 156 to lead McDaniel to a fifth-place finish at its own invitational hosted at The Bridges Golf Club in men's golf action on Saturday and Sunday.

Battling temperatures in the 30s and hard greens in the morning wave, the Green Terror carded a two-round total of 638 – 13 strokes off the pace of team champion St. John Fisher. McDaniel posted a 321 on Saturday before bouncing back with a 317 on Sunday.

The Cardinals used a tournament-low round of 308 to leapfrog Swarthmore and Rochester, posting a 625 to win by five shots. The Garnet, who held the 18-hole lead with a 313, carded a 317 on Sunday – a score which matched St. John Fisher's first round total – to finish second with a 630. The Yellow Jackets finished tied for third with New York University, posting a 631. Rochester had the most consistent two days, firing a 316 and 315 while NYU posted a 320-311.

McDaniel's B-team was seventh overall in the 15-team field with a score of 657 (328-329).

The Violets' Kyle Demshki earned the individual crown with a two-day total of 150 (73-77), earning the medalist honor on the No. 1 handicap hole in Sunday's round. He carded a four on the par-4 ninth to edge Swarthmore's Paul Weston and Muhlenberg's Zach Oyer, who both posted a five on the hole.

Bowman finished Saturday with a round of 79 before carding a 77 on Sunday to finish tied for ninth overall.

Chris Merrill (Kingsville, Md./Fallston) finished tied for 13th with a 158 (78-80).

Logan Connaughton (Matawan, N.J./Matawan Regional) and KJ Mazurek (Rumson, N.J./Rumson-Fair Haven) tied for 24th overall with matching totals of 163. Connaughton fired an 81 on Saturday and an 82 on Sunday while Mazurek posted an 84 in the first round before registering a 79 in the second round.

Paul Kovalcheck (Fairless Hills, Pa./Truman) was tied for 30th with a 164 (83-81).

Drew Bell (Roswell, Ga./Pope) led the B-team with a two-day score of 157, posting a 78 on Saturday and a 79 on Sunday to finish tied for 11th.

Bryan Johnson (Hampstead, Md./North Carroll) was tied for 22nd overall with a 162 (78-84).

Kyle Chittim (Annapolis, Md./Broadneck) and Alec Kissell (Fort Washington, Pa./Plymouth Whitemarsh) rounded out the B-team with a 165 and 173, respectively. Chittim finished 34th (84-81) while Kissell was tied for 53rd (88-85) in the 72-man field.

The Green Terror returns to action at the Mid-Atlantic Region Invitational at Hershey Country Club on Sunday and Monday. Tee time is 9 a.m. both days.
