McDaniel rallies to win sixth CC title
ELVERSON, Pa. – Greg Bowman (Catonsville, Md./Catonsville) finished tied for fourth overall to lead McDaniel to the 2011 Centennial Conference (CC) men's golf championship at Stonewall on Saturday and Sunday.
The Green Terror trailed by 14 strokes after shooting a 321 in the opening 18 on Saturday. By the end of the first 27 holes on day one, the squad had sliced that deficit in half.
On Sunday, McDaniel finished off the second round with a 306 but remained in fourth place, trailing Dickinson and Gettysburg by four shots and Muhlenberg by a stroke.
The Green Terror completed the day on Sunday, firing the second-lowest round of the tournament with a 305 to win its sixth title with a 54-hole score of 932, distancing the Bullets by eight strokes. The Mules were third at 943 while the Red Devils finished fourth with a 951.
Gettysburg's Peter Ruymann won the individual title with a score of 224.
With the championship – McDaniel's first since 2008 – the Green Terror earn the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA tournament, which will be held at Grandover Resort in Greensboro, N.C. on May 10-13.
Bowman was the only McDaniel player to score in the 70s all three rounds, garnering all-conference accolades. He started his tournament with a 76 before firing a 79 in the second round and closed the weekend with a round of 77.
Mazurek started his weekend with an 83 before going low in the second round with a 75 and wrapping up with a 77 in the third round.
Kovalcheck, last year's individual champion, clinched the title with a team-low round of 73 over the final 18. He started the weekend with a round of 85 before carding a 77 in the middle 18.
Connaughton posted an 86 in his first round before posting a 75 in the second round and 78 in the final round.
Johnson started his tournament with a 77 before posting a 79 in the split round and an 83 in the third round.
