DESTIN, Fla. – Two members of the McDaniel men's golf team have been named to the Division III PING all-region team, released by the Golf Coaches Association of America on Tuesday.
James Lillie (Garret Park, Md./Walter Johnson), a sophomore, made his second straight appearance on the All-Mid-Atlantic team while Cody Mewhirter (Hampstead, Md./North Carroll), a sophomore, earned his first regional honor.
Lillie leads the Green Terror this season with a 76.4 stroke average over his 23 rounds entering the NCAA championship. He won two events, including the Centennial Conference individual championship to earn Player of the Year and lead his squad to the team title and NCAA berth. At the conference tournament, he carded a 54-hole score of 219 for a new tournament record. He finished in the top 10 individually in seven of the 12 events in which he competed. He also notched three top-five showings. Lillie's best single round of the year was a 68 to establish a new low round at the conference championship.
Mewhirter finished second on the team with a 77.6 stroke average over his 23 rounds of competition. He recorded a low 18-hole round of 69 at the Guy W. Kuhn Invitational in the fall, joining Lillie with the only two Green Terrror golfers to post rounds better than 70. Mewhirter finished in the top 10 individually five times in 12 events this season and had one top-five showing.
The two were among 12 players honored in the Mid-Atlantic Region and one of 72 players recognized across the six regions. McDaniel was one of three Mid-Atlantic teams with multiple selections.
The Green Terror tees off for the second round of the NCAA Division III championship at 12:30 p.m. o Wednesday.
