Kane, Lillie finish seventh
WILMINGTON, Md. – Alex Kane (Danvers, Mass./Masconomet Regional) fired a team-low round of 72 on Sunday to finish with a 54-hole total of 228 and lead McDaniel to a second-place finish at the 2014 Centennial Conference (CC) men's golf championship at DuPont Country Club on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
The Green Terror, who posted a score of 918 to win the title last year, matched that number over the three days this year. However, Franklin & Marshall obliterated the tournament record (917) and finished with a 54-hole score of 899 behind a tournament-record low round of 293 on Saturday.
McDaniel trailed the Diplomats by five strokes after Friday's first round, firing a round of 312 while Franklin & Marshall carded a round of 307. On Saturday, the Diplomats put a 15-shot gap on the Green Terror and the rest of the field. McDaniel shot rounds of 303 on both Saturday and Sunday while the Diplomats posted the first two sub-300 rounds in conference tournament history with Saturday's 293 and Sunday's 299 to win by 19 strokes.
Kane improved each day of the tournament to finished tied with James Lillie (Garret Park, Md./Walter Johnson) for seventh place overall. Kane fired a round of 79 on Friday before posting a score of 77 on Saturday and carding the team's low round of the weekend with a one-over par 72 on Sunday.
Lillie's low round came with a 73 on Saturday. He joined Kane with a score of 79 on Friday before posting a round of 76 on Sunday.
Steven Tanen (Laurel Hallow, N.Y./Cold Spring Harbor) was consistent all weekend, carding three matching rounds of 77 to finish with a score of 231 and in 12th place.
Brian Norwitz (Germantown, Md./Northwest) finished 14th overall with a score of 233. He posted a round of 79 on Friday before having his best day on Saturday with a score of 76. He rounded out the weekend with a 78 over the final 18 holes.
Cody Mewhirter (Hampstead, Md./North Carroll) finished 15th in the field with a score of 234. He fired a round of 77 on Friday before posting a second-round score of 79. He finished with a final-round score of 78.
