McDaniel uses late rally, overtime to down Connecticut College

HAVERFORD, Pa. – Gibbs Preston (Baltimore, Md./McDonogh) scored just once, netting the game-winner 1:13 into the first overtime period to give McDaniel a 9-8 victory over Connecticut College in non-conference men’s lacrosse action on Saturday.

            Matt Hatton (Corning, N.Y./Corning East) led the Green Terror (4-1) with three goals while Ryan Hayes paced the Camels (2-2) with two goals and two assists.
            In a second half of runs, Bill Warner (Yardley, Pa./LaSalle) broke up a three-goal spurt by Connecticut with an unassisted marker to pull McDaniel within 8-6 with 5:53 to play in the fourth quarter.
            Hatton closed the deficit to one nearly two minutes later before DJ Rickels (Forest Hill, Md./Boys Latin School of Maryland) evened the game at 8-all with 3:04 showing in regulation.
            Preston made the most of the Green Terror’s three shot of the extra session, converting to give his team the victory in McDaniel’s second straight overtime affair.
            Behind goals from Steve Dachille and Ben Eischen in the game’s first 3:54, the Camels built an early 2-0 advantage.
            Seven seconds into the second quarter, Jed Barnes (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) found Rickels to close the deficit to one.
            With 10:08 showing, Wade Barry stretched the lead back to two but Barnes made it a 3-2 game at the intermission, scoring unassisted 2:13 before the break.
            Hayes and Sean Driscoll tallied 54 seconds apart to stretch the Connecticut lead to 5-2 with 10:25 to play in the third quarter.
            Hatton and Zach Weeden (Shirley, Mass./Rivers School) sliced the deficit to 5-4 in the final minute of the third quarter before Hatton’s second goal 1:03 into the final quarter knotted the score at 5-all.
            Just 1:10 later, Driscoll reestablished the Camel advantage before Dachille and Hayes stretched the lead to 8-5 with 7:56 to play.
            Matt Dean (Glen Burnie, Md./St. Vincent Pallotti) won 9 of 12 faceoffs for McDaniel.
            The Green Terror returns to action against Hamilton in Sanford, Fla., on Tuesday. Game time is 11 a.m.
