Washington builds big lead, holds off McDaniel rally
CHESTERTOWN, Md. – Bennett Cord scored three goals to lead Washington (Md.) to a 9-7 victory over McDaniel in the Centennial Conference (CC) men's lacrosse opener for both teams on Saturday.
The Shoremen (3-2, 1-0 CC) built a 9-1 lead through three quarters before staving off a furious rally that saw the Green Terror (3-4, 0-1 CC) tally six times in the fourth quarter.
Cord opened the scoring, finishing from Shane Kaski in a man-up situation for a 1-0 Washington lead 8:24 into the game.
Matt Dean (Glen Burnie, Md./St. Vincent Pallotti), who was 13-for-18 on faceoffs, won the ensuing possession. Rickels fired a shot that was saved but corralled his own rebound and put it back to knot the game at 1-all just nine seconds after Cord's marker.
Billy Stafford scored unassisted with 3:34 to play in the first quarter, sparking an 8-0 run over the next 32 minutes, 17 seconds.
Michael Pancottine opened the second period scoring with a man-down goal 20 seconds into the quarter.
Doug Herdegen found Cord to push the lead to 4-1 with 10:15 to play before Patrick Coyle and Kaski finished solo runs in the final 4:11 of the quarter to make it 6-1 at the intermission.
Coyle and Matt Lewis scored 56 seconds apart to give the hosts an 8-1 lead with 7:49 remaining in the third quarter before Cord capped his hat trick with 1:17 showing.
Michael Young (Pylesville, Md./North Harford) broke a 37-minute, 34-second scoring drought, finishing a solo run just 1:07 into the fourth period.
Rickels found the back of the net nearly two minutes later before Deane Mellor (Chadds Ford, Pa./Wilmington Friends School [Del.]) scored off a JS Duke (Fort Washington, Pa./Upper Dublin) feed for a man-up goal with 4:44 showing.
Back-to-back tallies from Yancheski just 55 seconds apart pulled the visitors within 9-6 with 1:22 to play.
Jed Barnes (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) made it a two-goal game with 45 seconds on the clock but that was as close as McDaniel could get.
In addition to his 13 faceoff winds, Dean added seven ground balls.
Christian Dallmus (Acton, Mass./Rivers School) made nine saves for the Green Terror while Peter Stewart had 15 stops for the Shoremen.
McDaniel returns to action at home against No. 6 Dickinson on Wednesday. Game time is 7 p.m.
