Haverford jumps out early, defeats McDaniel

HAVERFORD, Pa. – Max Hjelm recorded two goals and an assist to lead No. 10 Haverford to a 9-3 victory over McDaniel in Centennial Conference (CC) men's lacrosse action on Saturday.

DJ Rickels (Forest Hill, Md./Boys Latin School of Maryland) led the Green Terror (3-5, 0-2 CC) with two goals.

Nick Schoen and Zach Cohen also scored twice for the Fords (7-2, 2-1 CC), who built a 7-1 lead through three quarters of play.

Tied at 1-all after Hjelm and Rickels exchanged tallies in the game's first 6:42, Phillip Valliant finished a Jason Leeds assist with 13 seconds to play in the first quarter to spark a 6-0 run.

Schoen scored 1:49 into the second quarter before Hjelm and Cohen made it a 4-1 game with 10:01 to play in the second quarter.

Schoen finished a solo run with 5:32 to play in the period to push the lead to 6-1 at the break before Henry Millson registered his first goal of the season with 3:43 to play in the third for the only goal of the quarter.

Nick DiBernardo (Towson, Md./Calvert Hall) broke up the streak, finishing a Deane Mellor (Chadds Ford, Pa./Wilmington Friends School [Del.]) assist with 12:31 showing in the final quarter.

Rickels scored unassisted just 61 seconds later to make it a 7-3 game before Myles Monaghan and Cohen found the back of the net in the final 3:55.

Matt Mummert (Dillsburg, Pa./Northern) picked up six ground balls for McDaniel.

The Green Terror returns to action on Wednesday when the squad concludes its game with No. 12 Dickinson. The Red Devils are leading the game 4-3 with 20.5 seconds to play in the second quarter. Action resumes at 5 p.m.
