Gettysburg downs McDaniel, earns second seed in playoffs

GETTYSBURG, Pa. – J.C. Ward scored three times to lead No. 20 Gettysburg to an 8-2 victory over McDaniel in Centennial Conference (CC) men's lacrosse action on Saturday.

DJ Rickels (Forest Hill, Md./Boys Latin School of Maryland) and Skippy Clary (Baltimore, Md./Catonsville) each scored once for the Green Terror (6-8, 3-5 CC), who were eliminated from the conference playoffs with the loss.

The Bullets (10-5, 5-2 CC) scored the first three and last three goals of the contest, proving the difference and earning the second seed in next weekend's conference tournament, which will take place at Dickinson for the first-time ever.

Just 1:03 into the game, Danno Lynch fired home the game's first shot, converting from the right side to stake the hosts to a 1-0 lead before the defenses took control.

The two teams combined for 12 shots over the next more than 20 minutes of game action that included two hit posts by McDaniel before Ward extended the lead to 2-0 with 8:26 showing in the second quarter.

Henry Tesar finished from Pat Sartory nearly four minutes later before Clary broke up the shutout with 1:56 to play in the first half.

Martin Manilla was able to extend the lead back to three at the break, scoring from Ben Engleman with 3.7 seconds to play.

Lynch started the second half much the same way he did the first half, firing home a shot just 53 seconds into the third period for a 5-1 lead.

Rickles trimmed the deficit to 5-2, finishing a solo run with 2:06 to play in the third but Ward pushed the lead back to four, hitting off a Lynch feed with 49.3 to play in the period.

Ward rifled home a shot from close range to complete his hat trick with 2:21 on the clock before Derek Ruebling scored his first collegiate goal with 10.9 seconds to play, setting the final margin.

The Green Terror finished the game with a 35-27 advantage in shots but J.T. McCook needed to make only eight saves to pick up his 10th win of the season between the pipes.
