Scoring more than you allow
WESTMINSTER, Md. – Defense was rarely the problem for the McDaniel men's lacrosse team in 2011.
Since then-freshman Christian Dallmus (Acton, Mass./Rivers School) took over as the starting goalkeeper five games into the season, the Green Terror did not allow an opponent to reach double figures and Dallmus finished his rookie season with the Centennial Conference's (CC) best goals-against average at 6.46.
Sixth-year head coach Matt Hatton enters the 2012 season knowing that his squad is going to have to score more goals to earn a return trip to the conference tournament after missing by a game last spring.
Once McDaniel reached play in arguably Division III's toughest conference, the squad also failed to reach double figures in any of its eight CC games – something Hatton hopes will change in 2012.
Senior DJ Rickels (Forest Hill, Md./Boys Latin School of Maryland), a two-time All-American, will be the centerpiece of the attack once again after leading the team with 31 goals, nine assists and 40 points.
However, Rickels will also have the services of 2011's next six scorers alongside him in the attacking end. Nick DiBernardo (Towson, Md./Calvert Hall), Ben Yancheski (Phoenix, Md./Dulaney), JS Duke (Fort Washington, Pa./Upper Dublin), Skippy Clary (Baltimore, Md./Catonsville), Michael Young (Pylesville, Md./North Harford) and Michael Woglom (Cranford, N.J./Cranford) will all reprise significant offensive roles for the Green Terror. DiBernardo finished with 22 points on 16 goals and six assists while Yancheski also reached 20 points on 14 goals and six assists.
