WESTMINSTER, Md. – McDaniel exploded for five goals in a 1-minute, 51-second stretch to turn an 11-9 deficit into a 14-12 Centennial Conference (CC) men's lacrosse victory over Muhlenberg on Saturday.
Patrick Serio (Marriottsville, Md./Marriotts Ridge) led the Green Terror (6-7, 3-3 CC) with a career-best six goals – the most by a McDaniel player since DJ Rickels tallied six in 2010.
Tom Glancy led the Mules (2-10, 1-5 CC) with four goals while Pat Farrell had two goals and three assists.
Serio finished a pass from Sean Brett (Hamilton, N.J./Notre Dame) that drew the Green Terror within 10-9 with 7:34 to play but a Muhlenberg player was called for an unreleasble unnecessary roughness hit on Serio, giving McDaniel a man advantage for two minutes.
The Mules won the ensuing faceoff and called timeout. Out of the break, Austin Akner went right to goal and scored to stretch the lead back to two.
With 5:47 showing, Lawrence hit Serio for the second man-up tally of the penalty to knot the game.
Just after the penalty expired, Serio scored again off a Timothy McNichol (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mount Lebanon) pass for a 12-11 advantage with 5:22 remaining.
Just 27 seconds later, Kevin Nicholas (Glen Cove, N.Y./Glen Cove) hit the back of the net for a 13-11 lead.
McNichol capped the burst with 4:48 showing, finishing a Serio assist.
Glancy scored a man-up goal with 1:05 to play to set the final margin.
Neither team led by more than one until the Mules scored three straight in the third quarter.
Brett staked McDaniel to a 1-0 lead just 2:56 into the game before Jason Mertz and Elliott Dennis tallied 25 seconds apart for a 2-1 lead with 3:34 on the clock.
Serio and Steven Cassella traded goals to keep it a one-goal game after one quarter.
Unassisted tallies from Brett and Zach Monzo (Collegeville, Pa./Spring-Ford) in the first 2:42 of the second quarter gave the Green Terror a 4-3 lead before Jon Thomas scored a man-up goal with 8:42 showing.
Troy Becker (Yardley, Pa./Notre Dame) put McDaniel back in front before Glancy and Michael Heenan gave Muhlenberg a 6-5 advantage at the break.
Brett evented the game 2:44 into the third quarter before a Farrell goal and two from Glancy made it a 9-6 Mule lead after three quarter.
Two Serio tallies closed the deficit to 9-8 before Farrell pushed the lead back to two with 8:01 to play.
Zach Bicho (Millstone, N.J./The Hun School of Princeton) won 19 of his 27 faceoffs, picking up 14 ground balls himself.
McDaniel returns to action at Ursinus on Saturday. Game time is 5 p.m.
