McDaniel ties New Jersey City, advances to championship on PKs
YORK, Pa. – McDaniel and New Jersey City couldn't decide anything in 110 minutes of play at the Holiday Inn Conference Center Soccer Classic hosted by York (Pa.), battling to a 1-all draw in non-conference men's soccer action on Saturday.
The two teams needed a round of penalty kicks to determine who would face the host Spartans in Sunday's championship. The Green Terror (1-1-1) converted all five of its attempts to advance, 5-4.
Marrio Davis (Baltimore, Md./Friends School of Baltimore) scored McDaniel's goal in regulation, finding the upper-right off an attempted clear from a corner kick in the 36th minute.
With just 1:48 remaining in regulation, the Gothic Knights (2-1-1) collected a loose ball in the box knocked home by Alex Ceron knotted the game.
Neither team could find the back of the net in the 20 minutes of extra play to put the game in the books officially as a tie. However, tournament procedures required a winner to be declared to advance to the championship game.
Ceron made the first attempt of the round of five for NJCU and Edgar Escobar (Silver Spring, Md./Springbrook) responded.
Tom Krychkowski and Davis also both converted to keep the PK round deadlocked.
Walter Avans missed for the Gothic Knights before Ben Eveler (York, Pa./Red Lion) was able to convert for a 3-2 Green Terror edge.
Jonnathan Veloz and Luis Calderon (Silver Spring, Md./Bullis) each hit and Raphael Araujo followed with a make to tie the PKs at 4-all with one McDaniel kicker to go.
Max Rutherford (Potomac, Md./Winston Churchill) stepped to the ball and hit the back of the net to put his team in the championship game.
Sean Best (Adamstown, Md./Tuscarora) made 11 saves in net for the Green Terror.
Game time on Sunday is 3 p.m.
