Rutherford breaks up shutout
WESTMINSTER, Md. – Dickinson scored three times in the first half en route to a 4-1 Centennial Conference (CC) men's soccer victory over McDaniel on Wednesday.
Max Rutherford (Potomac, Md./Winston Churchill) scored for the Green Terror (2-5-1, 0-3 CC), breaking up the shutout in the 65th minute.
Nicolas Tierno notched a goal and an assist to lead the Red Devils (6-2-2, 3-0 CC), who remained perfect through the first third of conference play.
In the 20th minute, Shepherd Waldenberger shot a ball that was deflected on a diving stop. Daniel Gaj collected the rebound and put it home for a 1-0 lead.
Just 42 seconds later, Ben Gemberling-Johnson converted a penalty kick for a 2-0 lead.
Tierno finished a Bryan Gilmartin pass in the 33rd minute to stretch the lead to 3-0 at the break.
In the 55th minute, Tierno knocked all ball off a defender and inside the left post before Ruben Vaca (Gaithersburg, Md./Magruder) played the ball through just over nine minutes later, beating the keeper to Rutherford, who finished for a 4-1 final.
Zach Nibbelink (Hampstead, Md./North Carroll) made five saves in the first half while Sean Best (Adamstown, Md./Tuscarora) had three stops in the second half.
The Green Terror returns to action at home against No. 14 Swarthmore on Saturday. Game time is 3:30 p.m.
