Costa Rica Journal

8/5/13: The team arrived at Dulles Airport at 3 a.m. After a quick layover in Miami, both the women's and men's teams arrived in Costa Rica in the afternoon. We had an afternoon tune-up session at the National Soccer Training Facility as we readied ourselves for our scrimmage on the 6th.

8/6/13: We took a tour of the city including a visit to the food market and downtown San Jose.   A very unique experience, sampling the local cuisine, witnessing the coffee making process and getting lost in the local market.  After a good, hard fought game we beat Cartoga's academy squad 3-2. Junior forward Shane McCracken scored a hat-trick for the Green Terror with all goals coming in the first half.

8/7/13: After two days in the capital, Green Terror soccer traveled to Arenal Springs Resort. The men had a productive afternoon session, as the coaching staff reviewed formation tactics and high tempo passing with possession. In the evening, both teams enjoyed a buffet dinner and lounged poolside at the resort's wet bar.

8/8/13: To begin the day, Green Terror Soccer had an early breakfast to fuel up for zip lining. After a day of swinging through the jungle, the team traveled to San Carlos for a scrimmage double header.   Playing San Lorenzo in their stadium was a great experience, walking out to national anthems, the level of competition and the style in which we played (hit the woodwork four times) made it a memorable victory. We won 1-0 as outside midfielder Richard Forka put home a cross from winger Rubin Vaca. Afterwards the team enjoyed dinner at the Kleaver Restaurant.

8/9/13: After a five hour bus ride to the west coast, the teams finally arrived at their final destination on the trip. After some intense fitness during a jungle downpour, the teams enjoyed a buffet dinner at the resort restaurant and rested up for the upcoming day on the beach.

8/10/13: The teams would start their day with an early morning jog to the practice pitch followed by a brief session of passing and light fitness. Afterwards the teams both enjoyed a relaxing day on the beach, filled with swimming in the ocean and walking along the nearby cliffs. An afternoon beach barbeque lunch would fuel the boys and girls for the evening futsal tournament, which eventually saw the coaches' team as the victors with coach Corrieri the tournaments leading goal scorer.

8/11/13: At last, the teams had their final 11v11 scrimmages in Costa Rica.  With only 10 fit players and suffering another injury before half time the boys fell short losing 1-0.  We ended the day with a supposed team bonding game of charades which ended up being very competitive due to some dubious refereeing by coach.

8/12/13: The final day of the teams' journey consisted of an exciting adventure down the whitewater rapids in the heart of the Costa Rican rainforest.  Some bumps, bruises, Jesse's split open head and 3hrs later we were back on dry ground and ready to pack up.
