Brooks earns academic honor

WESTMINSTER, Md. – Brad Brooks (Newark, Del./Charter School of Wilmington), a sophomore on the McDaniel men's swimming team, was named to the Capital One Academic All-District II Division III at-large first team on Thursday.

Brooks earned his first nod to the team with a 4.00 GPA as of the end of the fall semester. Thirteen student-athletes, who are not part of the 12 sports that have a distinct Academic All-America team, are selected to the at-large first team. The exercise science and physical education major now advances to the national ballot with all of the first-team selections from the eight districts for the Academic All-America team, which will be released on June 3.

Brooks won the 500 and 1,650 freestyle races at the 2014 Centennial Conference (CC) championship meet to advance to the NCAA Division III national championship for the second straight season in the two events. Brooks was also second in the 200 free at the CC meet. In two season racing at the CC championship, he has five gold medals and one silver medal to his ledger.

The only All-American in men's swimming program history, Brooks added his second career honorable mention nod this season to go with one first-team honor last year. At the NCAA meet, he was 10th in the 1650 free with a time of 15:44.66.

A three-time Dean's List selection with Highest Honors, he was selected as a College Swimming Coaches Association of America Scholar All-American last spring.

The members of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) select the All-District team. District II consists of all of the Division III colleges and universities in Connecticut, Delaware, Kentucky, Maryland, New Jersey, Rhode Island, West Virginia and the District of Columbia.

To be nominated for the Capital One Academic All-America program presented by CoSIDA, a student-athlete must be at least a sophomore with a 3.3 or higher cumulative grade-point average and be a starter or significant reserve.
