Detrich named head men’s and women’s tennis coach

WESTMINSTER, Md. – Robert Detrich has been named McDaniel College's head men's and women's tennis coach, announced by Director of Athletics Paul Moyer on Monday.

"As we conducted this search, Robert stood out to us as someone with an excellent tennis background," Moyer said. "He has had success at the highest level and someone we feel can get out tennis program to the next level."

Since 2008, Detrich has served as the Director of Training for ranked juniors and college players at SportFit in Bowie, Md. During his tenure at SportFit, he has had an integral part in producing a number of college players, many of whom are at top Division I programs while others are playing on the professional circuit.

"I'm really excited to work with the McDaniel student-athletes," Detrich said. "I'm looking forward to continuing the development of the program. I am committed to achieving excellence on the court and in the classroom."

Prior to his move to the junior ranks, Detrich served seven years as the head men's tennis coach at the United States Military Academy.

While in West Point, his Black Knight team went from an average program to the top five in the Eastern rankings. During that time, he produced 12 Patriot League individual champions and his Army teams won the Patriot League championship in 1990 and 1992.

Following his stint in the Division I ranks, he coached top juniors in California, serving as the Director of Northern California's Tennis Association's Collegiate Program from 1995-98.

In 2002, he returned east and served as the Director of Tennis at Severn Valley Tennis and Fitness Club before taking over as Director of ELITE training at SportFit Tennis and Fitness in 2008. He developed and trained more than 300 ranked juniors players annually and during his time at SportFit, coached the top 18-year-old boys player in the Mid-Atlantic region.

Detrich was an All-East doubles selection in 1977 during his collegiate playing days at the United States Naval Academy. He was management and technology major at Navy.

He earned a bachelor of science in physical education from South Carolina in 1980 and a master's in exercise physiology from the same institution two years later.

Detrich will assume his duties immediately. McDaniel opens its spring schedule on Saturday, Mar. 23. The men will open at Washington (Md.) while the women are at home against Swarthmore.
