Giles, Shuck record pair of wins at ITAs

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – Will Giles (LaVale, Md./Bishop Walsh) and Luke Shuck (Frederick, Md./Tuscarora) each won their first singles match and teamed to win their first doubles match at the ITA Southeast Regional hosted by Mary Washington on Saturday and Sunday.

In the Blue 3 Singles Draw, Shuck defeated DeSales' Jorey Ferraro 6-1, 6-1 in the round of 16 while Giles was victorious 6-3, 7-5 over Randolph-Macon's Shane Berry in the same round. In the quarterfinals, Paul Vecchio (Ursinus) topped Shuck 6-2, 6-4 while Franklin Mullinix (Goucher) defeated Giles 6-3, 7-6 (7-4 in tiebreaker).

Giles and Shuck teamed in the Blue 2 Doubles Draw for an 8-4 win over Averett's Carlos Lora and Henry Blanco in the opening round. In the quarterfinals, Wornden Ly and Raymond McDermott (Stevenson) topped Giles and Shuck, 8-6.

Quinn Burker (Westminster, Md./Winters Mill) and Jimmy Wawrzynski (Westminster, Md./Westminster) also competed in the tournament, entering in the Blue 1 Doubles Draw. Stefan Hein and Kelson Weber (Salisbury) notched an 8-1 win over the due in the opening round before Paul Gladstone and Anthony Wilson (Virginia Wesleyan) topped Burker and Wawrzynski 8-0 in the consolation quarterfinals.

McDaniel opens the spring schedule against Frostburg on Saturday, Mar. 3. Match time is 1 p.m.

Blue 1 Doubles: Round of 16: Stefan Hein/Kelson Weber (SAL) def. Quinn Burker/Jimmy Wawrzynski 8-1; Consolation Quarterfinals: Paul Gladstone/Anthony Wilson (VWC) def. Burker/Wawrzynski 8-0.

Blue 2 Doubles: Round of 16: Will Giles/Shuck def. Carlos Lora/Henry Blanco (AVER) 8-4; Quarterfinals: Wornden Ly/Raymond McDermott (STE) def. Giles/Shuck 8-6.
