Sprinting in the right direction
McDaniel finishes eighth at championships behind Quinn silver
HAVERFORD, Pa. – Fonati Quinn (Gaithersburg, Md./Richard Montgomery) finished second in the triple jump to lead McDaniel to an eighth-place finish at the 2011 Centennial Conference (CC) men's indoor track and field championships hosted by Haverford on Saturday.
The Green Terror amassed 22.5 points in the nine-team field. Haverford own the title once again with 164.5 points.
Quinn earned the team's lone medal, earning silver with a personal-best leap of 13.71 meters.
McDaniel also put three sprinters in the 55-meter finals. Jerome Hill (Baltimore, Md./Northwestern) earned the top Green Terror time in the prelims, winning his heat with a time of 6.71 seconds. Juris Eyler (Middletown, Md./Middletown) won his heat in a time of 6.75 seconds to earn the fourth seed in the finals. Joe Rollins (Temple Hills, Md./Surratsville) won his heat to be the fifth seed with a time of 6.76 seconds.
In the finals, Rollins bettered his previous best by 0.11 seconds to move into sixth on the program's all-time performer list and finish fourth overall – 0.04 seconds from a medal.
Hill turned in a time of 6.70 seconds in the finals to finish fifth while Eyler crossed in 6.92 seconds to place eighth.
Hill, Trevor Crest (Baltimore, Md./Episcopal), Eyler and Jake Nichols (Frederick, Md./Gov. Thomas Johnson) combined to finish sixth in the 4x200-meter relay with a time of 1:35.07, breaking into the program's all-time top 10.
Nichols tied for eighth in the pole vault, clearing 3.50 meters while anchoring the 4x400 relay, joining C.J. Naper (New Windsor, Md./South Carroll), Hill and Crest to finish eighth in a time of 3:39.43.
Naper was ninth in the mile with a time of 4:31.55 and 11th in the 800 with a time of 2:03.30.
Nichols added a ninth-place showing in the 55 hurdles (8.85 seconds).
Rollins and Quinn finished 11th (5.76 meters) and 12th (5.74), respectively, in the long jump.
Crest finished 20th in the 55 (7.10 seconds) while Chuck Kronmiller (Norristown, Pa./Methacton) was 24th (7.24).
Eric Spioch (Westminster, Md./Westminster) crossed 14th in the 55 hurdles (9.28).
Kronmiller was also 18th in the shot put (11.08 meters) while Ken Polk (Berlin, Md./Stephen Decatur) finished 11th in the triple jump (11.75)
The Green Terror opens the outdoor season at the Battleground Relays hosted by Mary Washington on Mar. 19.
