SELINSGROVE, Pa. – Jake Nichols (Frederick, Md./Gov. Thomas Johnson) led a quartet of different McDaniel athletes to record top-four finishes at the Orange and Maroon Classic hosted by Susquehanna in men's indoor track and field action on Sunday.
Nichols cleared 3.65 meters to record the Green Terror's top individual finish at the non-scoring meet, hitting one of 12 Centennial Conference (CC) qualifiers.
Nichols was fifth in the finals of the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 9.12 seconds after qualifying with a sixth-place time of 9.27 in the preliminaries.
Jordan Birden (Baltimore, Md./Cristo Ray Jesuit) added two fourth-place showings on the day, clearing 1.73 meters in the high jump and leaping 6.00 meters in the long jump – both CC-qualifying marks. The high jump mark is fourth on the program's all-time list.
Birden was also sixth in the triple jump with a conference-qualifying jump of 11.25 meters.
Steve Wetherhold (Catasauqua, Pa./Catasauqua) moved up to seventh on the all-time shot put list, hurling a throw of 13.04 meters in his first action of the season to qualify for the CC meet and finish fourth in the event.
Jake Zamostny (Mt. Airy, Md./South Carroll) led the way in the running events with a fourth-place finish in the 800, hitting the CC mark with a time of 2:05.84.
Arthur Williams (Baltimore, Md./Cristo Ray Jesuit) added a pair of eighth-place finishes in the jumps, leaping a CC distance of 5.41 meters in the long jump and hitting 10.89 meters in the triple jump. He was also seventh in the 60 with a CC-qualifying time of 7.43 seconds.
Kyle Dunn (Crofton, Md./South River) recorded four top-11 finishes on the day. His top finish came in the triple jump, finishing ninth with a jump of 10.48 meters. He was 10th in both the long jump (4.53 meters) and 60 meters (7.58 seconds) and placed 11th in the weight throw (8.55 meters).
Chuck Kronmiller (Norristown, Pa./Methacton) and Carlos Hernandez (Derwood, Md./Magruder) rounded out top-10 individual finishes. Kronmiller was eighth with a CC-qualifying and personal-best toss of 12.02 meters in the shot put. Hernandez was eighth with a throw of 11.14 meters in the weight throw.
Kronmiller was also 22nd in the 200 (25.84 seconds) while Hernandez was 14th in the shot put (10.68 meters).
The quartet of Trevor Crest (Baltimore, Md./Episcopal), James Ways (Westminster, Md./Winters Mill) Brad Heavner (Frederick, Md./Urbana) and Williams teamed to finish third in the 4x200-meter relay with a time of 1:39.06.
Heavner, Crest, Dunn and Williams were sixth in the 4x400 relay with a time of 3:55.15.
Crest rounded out those with CC times, finishing 11th in the 200 (24.63 seconds).
Jeff Thompson (Salisbury, Md./Mardela) finished 14th in the weight throw (7.20 meters) and 17th in the shot put (9.39 meters).
Calvin Ball (Westminster, Md./Westminster) finished 18th in both the 800 (2:29.03) and mile (5:22.50) while Jason Stein (Potomac, Md./Thomas S. Wooten) was 19th in the mile (5:31.30) to round out competitors.
The Green Terror returns to action at the Hagerstown Invitational on Saturday. Action begins at 10 a.m.
