McDaniel places second at Hopkins/Loyola

Hernandez wins hammer to lead the way

BALTIMORE, Md. – Carlos Hernandez (Derwood, Md./Magruder) won the hammer throw to lead McDaniel to a second-place finish at the Johns Hopkins/Loyola Homecoming Meet in men’s outdoor track and field action on Friday.

As a team, the Green Terror finished second in the four-team event with 75 points. Johns Hopkins won the meet easily with 310 points. Rutgers-Camden (55) and Loyola (31) rounded out the competitors.

Hernandez threw a distance of 31.37 meters in the hammer to win but also earned points in the shot put (10.90 meters, fourth), discus (28.37, sixth) and javelin (28.08, sixth).

CJ Naper (New Windsor, Md./South Carroll) led the way on the track, finishing third in the 800 with a time of 2:00.94 – 0.77 seconds behind the race winner.

Rob Kelvey (Westminster, Md./Westminster) also turned in a third-place result, finishing the 5,000 in a time of 16:26.94.

Rick Gonzalez (Columbia, Md./Oakland Mills) was second in the 400 hurdles with a time of 1:02.69 in his first action of the spring.

Louis Lachman (Columbia, Md./Resevoir) notched a trio of top-five finishes. He was fourth in the long jump (4.99 meters) and fifth in both the 100 (13.25 seconds) and 200 (26.63).

Nate Bell (Westminster, Md./Francis Scott Key) and David Sampson (Philadelphia, Pa./Charter High School for Architecture and Design) rounded out the top-eight finishes for McDaniel. Bell was fourth in the shot put (10.90 meters) and javelin (36.08) and fifth in the discus (28.94) while Sampson was seventh in both the shot put (8.98) and discus (22.69).

The Green Terror concludes action at the Messiah Multi Meet on Saturday before the entire team returns to action at the Mason-Dixon Invitational hosted by Gettysburg on Apr. 17.
