Butler records two top 5s

TOWSON, Md. – Woody Butler (Smithsburg, Md./Middletown) notched a pair of top-five finishes to lead McDaniel at the Towson Invitational in men's track and field action on Saturday.

The senior tied for fourth in the high jump, clearing 1.78 meters, to lead the Green Terror at the non-scoring meet that featured teams from Division I, II and III. Butler was also fifth in the long jump, leaping 6.07 meters. He hit two of the team's 15 Centennial Conference (CC)-qualifying marks.

Ron Shriver (Westminster, Md./Francis Scott Key) earned the victory in the 10,000 as the only competitor, finishing with a time of 36:40.45.

Carlos Hernandez (Derwood, Md./Magruder) led the way in throwing events, finishing ninth in the discus with a personal-best hurl of 40.55 meters. He was also 17th in the shot put with a second CC qualifier, reaching 11.83 meters. Hernandez added a 19th-place showing in the hammer (22.58).

Nate Bell (Union Bridge, Md./Francis Scott Key) hit a pair of CC marks, finishing 12th in the discus (36.17) and 18th in the shot put (11.75).

Nick Smith (Eldersburg, Md./Liberty) rounded out a trio of discus qualifiers, finishing 15th with a toss of 33.24.

Chuck Kronmiller (Norristown, Pa./Methacton) finished seventh in the javelin, throwing a distance of 44.74 meters for a CC qualifier. He was also 19th in the discus (28.57).

Jake Nichols (Frederick, Md./Gov. Thomas Johnson) notched a trio of eighth-place finishes that hit CC marks in all three events. He finished the 110 hurdles in a time of 16.96 seconds, the 400 hurdles in a time of 58.65 seconds and cleared 3.60 meters in the pole vault.

Louis Lachman (Woodstock, Md./Marriots Ridge) and Caleb Phillips (Frederick, Md./Gov. Thomas Johnson) hit the CC standard in the 400, finishing 12th (54.42 seconds) and 15th (54.84), respectively.

Jordan Birden (Baltimore, Md./Cristo Rey Jesuit) finished sixth in the high jump, clearing 1.73 meters. Kyle Dunn (Crofton, Md./South River) joined him as a conference qualifier in the event, clearing the same height but finishing ninth of judge's decision.

Peter Merkel (Ellicott City, Md./Homeschool) was ninth in the 5,000 with a time of 16:51.06 while Calvin Ball (Westminster, Md./Westminster) bettered his personal best with a time of 17:43.40.

Phillips and Lachman joined Brad Heavner (Frederick, Md./Urbana) and Matthew Peterson (Littleton, Colo./Lakewood) to finish fourth in the 4x400 relay with a time of 3:50.54.

The Green Terror returns to action at its own Twilight Invitational on Wednesday. Action begins at 4 p.m.
