Butler wins twice

WESTMINSTER, Md. – Woody Butler (Smithsburg, Md./Middletown) won the high jump and the javelin to lead McDaniel to a fourth-place finish at its own Twilight Meet in men's track and field action on Wednesday.

The Green Terror amassed 77 points. Dickinson won the eight-team meet with 175 points.

Butler cleared a personal-best 1.87 meters (6-2) to win the high jump and now ranks fifth on the program's all-time list. He also bombed a 53.15-meter (174-4) throw in the javelin to record the third-best throw in the Centennial Conference (CC) this season.

Butler was also 10th in the shot put (11.66 meters) and 13th in discus (30.80) to round out a quartet of CC-qualifying marks. As a team, McDaniel notched 20 conference-qualfying marks at the meet.

Jake Nichols (Frederick, Md./Gov. Thomas Johnson) was also an individual champion, winning the pole vault by clearing 3.58 meters. He was also third in the 110 hurdles (16.24 seconds), ninth in javelin (36.70 meters) 12th in the discus (31.01) and 20th in the shot put (9.92).

Jordan Birden (Baltimore, Md./Cristo Rey Jesuit) joined Butler, clearing 1.87 meters in the high jump but finished second on judges' discretion. He was also third in the long jump (5.92).

Kyle Dunn (Crofton, Md./South River) was fifth in the high jump, clearing 1.67 meters.

Chuck Kronmiller (Norristown, Pa./Methacton) rounded out the qualifiers in the javelin with a toss of 44.12 meters to finish fifth. Andy Guilford (Westminster, Md./Westminster) missed the mark by a foot, throwing 41.30 meters to finish sixth.

Steve Wetherhold (Catasuqua, Pa./Catasuqua), Kronmiller and Carlos Hernadez (Derwood, Md./Magruder) were fifth (12.38), sixth (12.37) and seventh (12.35) in the shot put, respectively. Nate Bell (Union Bridge, Md./Francis Scott Key) finished ninth (11.95) and CJ Kaszuba (Manahawkin, N.J./Southern Regional) was 11th (11.64) in his first attempt in collegiate competition to round out the CC qualifiers.

Hernandez (third, 40.38), Bell (sixth, 37.15) and Nick Smith (Eldersburg, Md./Liberty) (ninth, 31.95) also qualified in the discus.

Caleb Phillips (Frederick, Md./Gov. Thomas Johnson) led the way on the track with a seventh-place finish in the 400, finishing with a CC-qualifying time of 55.64 seconds.

The Green Terror returns to action at Millersville Metrics on Saturday. Action begins at 10 a.m.
