Nichols records 5450 in decathlon

MILLERSVILLE, Pa. – Jake Nichols (Frederick, Md./Gov. Thomas Johnson) recorded a personal-best score of 5,450 points in the decathlon to lead McDaniel at the Millersville Metrics in men's outdoor track and field action on Friday and Saturday.

The senior bettered his 2011 Centennial Conference (CC) championship showing by 63 points, still ranking second all-time.

His best place-finish came in the pole vault, where he cleared an outdoor personal best 3.75 meters to finish second with 549 points. He was also second in the discus with a throw of 30.27 (470 points). He amassed more than 600 points in two events – the 400 (fourth, 53.67 seconds) and the 110 hurdles (third, 16.72).

Jordan Birden (Baltimore, Md./Cristo Rey Jesuit) recorded the lone top-10 individual finish for the Green Terror at the non-scoring meet, clearing 1.75 meters to finish tied for seventh in the high jump.

Carlos Hernandez (Derwood, Md./Magruder) and Nate Bell (Union Bridge, Md./Francis Scott Key) recorded the only other two CC qualifiers on the windy day.

Hernandez finished 16th in the discus (37.28) and 20th in the shot put (11.79). He was also 20th in the hammer (30.32).

Bell hit the mark in the discus, finishing 19th with a throw of 36.12 meters. He was also 21st in the shot put (11.76) and 21st in the javelin (37.70).

Jeff Thompson (Salisbury, Md./Mardela) finished 24th in the hammer (18.15) and 30th in the shot put (8.49).

Peter Merkel (Ellicott City, Md./Homeschool) finished 13th in the 3,000 with a time of 9:55.16 while Jason Stein (Potomac, Md./Thomas S. Wootton) was 19th (10:39.23).

Louis Lachman (Woodstock, Md./Marriots Ridge) led the way in the sprints, finishing 34th in the 400 (55.10 seconds) and 44th in the 200 (25.02).

Kyle Dunn (Crofton, Md./South River) finished 23rd in the long jump, reaching 5.18 meters.

Jonathan Snack was 25th with a jump of 4.90 in the same event. He also crossed 35th with a time of 12.61 seconds in the 100.

Ron Shriver (Westminster, Md./Francis Scott Key) crossed 20th in the 5,000 with a time of 17:25.98 while Caleb Phillips (Frederick, Md./Gov. Thomas Johnson) was 25th in the 1,500 with a time of 4:16.27.

Matthew Peterson (Littleton, Colo./Lakewood) and Dylan Ryan (River Forest, Ill./Oak Park and River Forest) were 49th (2:08.26) and 56th (2:31.97), respectively, in the 800.

The Green Terror returns to action at the Hopkins/Loyola Invitational on Saturday.
