Hernandez notches first, second

WESTMINSTER, Md. – Carlos Hernandez (Derwood, Md./Magruder) won the shot put and finished second in the discus to lead McDaniel at its own Twilight Meet in men's track and field action on Tuesday.

Hernandez dropped a 12.72-meter throw in the shot put and added a toss of 36.02 meters in the discus as part of no fewer than 10 Centennial Conference (CC) qualifiers for the Green Terror at the non-scoring meet.

Peter Merkel (Ellicott City, Md./Homeschool), Jordan Birden (Baltimore, Md./Cristo Rey Jesuit) and Nate Bell (Union Bridge, Md./Francis Scott Key) also picked up individual wins.

Merkel won the 10,000 meters with a time of 35:37.24.

Bell won the discus with a toss of 38.09 meters and was third in the shot put (11.67 meters).

Birden won the high jump, clearing 1.77 meters, and was eighth in the long jump with a leap of 5.53 meters.

Jake Nichols (Frederick, Md./Gov. Thomas Johnson) posted a second-place finish in the 110 hurdles with a time of 16.94 seconds.

Ron Shriver (Westminster, Md./Francis Scott Key) added a second-place showing in the 10,000 with a time of 36:18.48.

James Ways (Westminster, Md./Winters Mill) placed second in the javelin with a throw of 33.63 meters.

CJ Kaszuba (Manahawkin, N.J./Southern Regional) was third in the discus (33.63 meters) while Caleb Phillips (Frederick, Md./Gov. Thomas Johnson) placed third in the 800 with a CC-qualifying time of 2:01.32.

Louis Lachman (Woodstock, Md./Marriots Ridge) finished fourth in the 400 (54.64 seconds) and ninth in the 200 (24.91).

Jason Stein (Potomac, Md./Thomas S. Wootten) crossed fourth in the 1,500 (4:55.87) and sixth in the 3,000 (10:46.38).

Matt Peterson (Littleton, Colo./Lakewood) placed fifth in the 800 with a time of 2:07.54.

Alex Murchison (Edgewood, Md./Archbishop Curley) was sixth (30.63 meters) in the discus, seventh in the shot put (9.04) and ninth in the discus (24.50) while Jeff Thompson (Salisbury, Md./Mardela) was eighth in both the shot put (8.55) and javelin (29.93).

The Green Terror returns to action at the Mason-Dixon Invitational hosted by Gettysburg on Saturday.
