BRIDGEWATER, Va. – Ryan McSorley (Marmora, N.J./Ocean City) won the pole vault in his first collegiate action to lead McDaniel at the Jopson Invitational hosted by Bridgewater in men's outdoor track and field action on Saturday.
As part of a busy debut, McSorley won the pole vault, clearing 2.55 meters notch the Green Terror's lone first-place finish at the non-scoring meet.
McSorley was also eighth in the high jump, clearing a Centennial Conference (CC)-qualifying height of 1.70 meters. He was also eighth in the javelin (35.63), 14th in the long jump (4.61) and 22nd in the shot put (8.92).
Kyle Dunn (Crofton, Md./South River) also had a busy day for McDaniel, notching three qualifiers in the five events in which he competed. He finished sixth in both the shot put (12.79 meters) and discus (36.35) with two of his three qualifying marks. He also qualified in the 100 with a time of 12.19 seconds to finish eighth in the prelims.
Dunn rounded out his day with a third-place showing in the pole vault (2.40 meters) and seventh-place finish in the javelin (36.20).
Jordan Birden (Baltimore, Md./Cristo Rey Jesuit), Connor Heavner (Frederick, Md./Urbana) and Luis Miramontes (San Jose, Calif./San Jose) rounded out qualifiers in the field events. Birden hit the CC mark in the high jump, finishing fifth with a jump of 1.80 meters while Heavner and Miramontes both had their mark in the discus. Heavner was eighth with a throw of 34.69 meters while Miramontes was ninth with a throw of 31.17.
Heavner was also 12th in the javelin (24.29) while Miramontes was 16th in the shot put (11.12).
Chris Jones (Centreville, Va./Centreville) notched the only other CC qualifier on the track, finishing ninth in the 1,500 with a time of 4:11.43.
Peter Merkel (Ellicott City, Md./Homeschool) just missed the qualifying standard in the same even, finishing 11th with a time of 4:11.96.
The duo comprised half of the 4x800-meter relay, joining Jim Heilman (Lutherville, Md./Baltimore Lutheran) and Keegan Duesterhaus (Spartanburg, S.C./Spartanburg Day) to finish third with a time of 8:30.57.
Heilman finished 12th in the 3,000 with a time of 9:34.27, which ranks seventh on the program's all-time list. Calvin Ball (Westminster, Md./Westminster) improved on his best time, turning in a time of of 9:41.06 to take ninth place on the all-time list.
The Green Terror returns to action at the Millersville Metrics on Saturday.
